We had the good fortune of connecting with Trinity Cross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trinity, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always made my own garments. When I lived in Asheville NC my friend had a vintage shop and asked me if I would like to make some one of a kind items for the shop. I happily agreed and after I saw that others wanted to wear my creations as well I decided to move back to Oakland Ca and go to fashion school and jump into becoming a full time designer and creator. That was over 20 years ago!

Owning your own business you will work much harder than you would for anyone else.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love creating from materials that already exist like bed vintage bed sheets and deadstock fabrics. It connects me to my roots of making one off designs from thrift store finds. It keeps the designs precious, made in small batches if not one of a kind. Its sustainable… Making clothing that impacts the earth as little as possible is always and huge driving force behind Field Day. There is so much good material just sitting around waiting for someone to find it and make something amazing from it. Hand hunting these fabrics myself helps also keep the costs down and price points more accessible to more people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I currently live in Nevada City CA. I would definitely take them to the Yuba River, especailly in the Summer for a dip. Grab a yummy bite at my favorite Heartwood cafe for some local organic yummy goodness. For artisan drinks I love to go to the National Hotel & Golden Area. My Showroom in Downtown Nevada City is also a stop off point for a lot of my friends. The Saturday morning farmers market is full of sweet outfits and savory goods sure to delight.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Holly Hobbie all the way, my childhood muse. She glamorized sewing, gardening, animal husbandry and all around looking amazing in her patchwork attire and bonnet.
