We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Deramus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, what makes you happy? Why?
I get extremely happy giving back to others and making people feel and look beautiful. Seeing their facial expressions at the end is very heart warming to me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a makeup artist/ wig slayer in the beauty industry and the founder of The Jewels and Gents, a non-profit mentor organization. When it comes to the beauty industry my creativity brings out the beauty in my canvas (clients). I am detailed in everything that I do. I love what I do, not just for the money. The connections and friendships that I have made along the way are what keep me going.
Jewels and Gents is an organization that is really in our community. We are putting in the footwork to help our youth become successful, positive leaders. We accept our youth with open arms no matter what they are going through. We want them to know they have mentors who truly care for them.
I am most proud of the change in the lives of the youth who we have impacted. In the beauty industry, I am enthused about MY WORK!!!! Not a day goes by that I am not appreciative of my struggles and where I have come from. They are what helped contribute to the woman I am today.
I’ve gotten to where I am today from hard work and perseverance. I have had many sleepless nights and days where I have cried feeling so defeated but I never gave up. I constantly wake up every day and post my work, I have a supportive team (family, friends, and social media). None of this came by easy. I had to grind hard for everything.
For the Jewels and Gents, we started from a failed travel football team where the individual who started the team gave up on our children. We knew we had to do something so we created this program to help mentor them and create a safe space for them and now we have partnered with JAG High School mentoring their seniors and getting them ready for life after high school. It has been fun but it hasn’t been easy. I kept working hard, whenever I received a no or if something didn’t go as planned I didn’t quit, I always pushed through.
Throughout my Journey, I’ve learned to stop procrastination and go hard for what I desire. Always have patience, nothing that is worth having will come easy. I am still learning to better manage my time, I just work on it day by day. No matter what always keep business separate from personal.
I want people to know that Amber Deramus is a caring, passionate, and driven person. I strive every day to be the best version of myself that I can be. My brand and organization are what I have put my blood, sweat, and tears into building. Every thought that came into making them were made with my clients and youth in mind.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to IPIC theater. I am a movie and food person and so is my best friend. At IPIC we can eat dinner, have a few drinks, and chill while watching a great movie. It’s very relaxing and has a luxurious feel inside. I love the Georgia Aquarium so we would have to go there because I love sea animals( dolphins being my favorite). We would visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, The Zoo, and the Escape Game Atlanta.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give my shout out to God, my parents, James Huffman (who passed away) my mother (Taiyanca Huffman). My husband, (Steven Deramus), my son (Jaiden Huffman), siblings, nieces, nephews, Zollyann for always believing in me and giving me countless opportunities. Lastly, a true friend who has been supporting me ever since she has met me, Zaneta. They are my cheerleaders and biggest supporters!!! Whenever I call on them they are there and when I’m down they are there to lift me up. Always being understanding and backing me with everything that I do.
