Meet Carrie Morey: Founder/Owner Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie Morey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carrie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
For me, work/life balance definitely changes over time. When I started Callie’s Biscuits in 2005, my goal was to be able to create a food business that allowed me the freedom to raise our daughters AND have a career of my own. For the first decade of this journey, the balance was very defined and easy to achieve. Once the business started to grow, there have been times where balance hasn’t come in the day-to-day, but instead it comes week-to-week – I’ll have to work a little more one day in order to be home with family the next day. The balance is still there, but it’s not the same each day.

The key to achieving balance is always keeping it in the forefront of your mind and on your running to do list so it is never lost. If I can’t pick up my daughters from school every day this week, I’ll pick them up three days this week and 5 days next week. If you want it, you will achieve it. It’s a goal of mine, so it’s my priority.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit is a handmade biscuit company, making Southern biscuits and more for our customers, and serving biscuits and Southern staples through our online store, grab and go eateries, and grocery stores all across the country. What sets us apart is that we are handmade, and the proof is in the biscuit! Nothing is easy when starting a business, and after 15 years, it only gets harder. The daily challenge of running and growing this business is what gets me excited and out of the bed in the morning. The excitement of what is to come keeps me going and wanting more. We overcome challenges on the daily, by problem solving and then moving on to the next– one puzzle at a time. When there are no problems, there is no growth, so you want those problems. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit is keeping the tradition of Southern biscuit making alive, baking hot little biscuits that bring people around the table.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Virgina Highlands is definitely my favorite neighborhood for shopping and progressive suppers!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is to my family. My immediate home family, but also my biscuits family, all our team members who work so hard to make our business work. I can’t do it alone… I am the idea maker and my biscuits family makes it all come to fruition… Also, my home family not only inspires me to do better and keep going, but they help with making our family run! It’s a team effort on both sides!
