We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Ferrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Networking has helped me a lot. If you want your business to get out there and to get the clientele you need, you have to go out to events and talk to people to promote your business. Being consistent also has helped me, I’m always trying to do new things to advertise my business. I work long hours sometimes and sometimes it can be exhausting but it’s all worth it because I look at the bigger picture at what I’m building for me now and in the future. I attend business events to network with other people who have their own business and also to pass out cards and to talk to people about my Salon. Going to different events has connected me with many different resources and information. I work all the time so that takes away from other things and I don’t have time to do a lot but I work hard now so that in the future all of the things that I’ve always wanted to do can be accomplished. I know that if I keep working hard, promoting and networking my Salon will be everything I want it to be and more. I take time out to write down everything that I want to do and once I accomplish it I check it off. Writing down goals has really helped me alot and I do this every week, my mind is always thinking of what I need to do and steps that I can take to accomplish them so writing my thoughts down helps me to relax and to see the goals that I accomplish really means a lot to me and motivates me to keep going even harder. I also do research on different styles and what’s new in the hair industry so that I can stay current on what’s going on so that I can keep clientele coming in. I believe you can always learn something new and grow because no one knows everything and it’s always room for improvement to make yourself better.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Heavenly Designs By Ebony Hair Salon, is a place where you can come in and feel welcomed. We offer a variety of services in which clients tell me it’s hard to find a place that offers many different services. I didn’t want to limit services so that’s why I decided to also have a Barber who is Jamarree and a Braider and her named is Kiya. What ever service I don’t provide I try to make sure that someone in the Salon can and that brings in a lot of business. Before opening up my very own Salon I worked in another Salon and a Barber Shop as well. The process of me finally stepping out to accomplish the goal I’ve always had to have my own Salon was not easy at all. First I was scared because I didn’t know where to start but I started doing research and writing down every idea I had about how I want my Salon to look, how I wanted the experience to be when people come in and the people that I wanted to work in there with me as well. I had to learn how to network and get more clientele because I am a little shy especially when talking to new people but I had to get out of my comfort zone and think bigger because I knew if I wanted to accomplish every goal I wrote down I had to go out and talk to people about my business. I want the people to know that we welcome everyone in Heavenly Designs By Ebony Hair Salon. This Salon is a place where they can relax and get the service that they desire. This Salon is my testimony that no matter where you come from or what people say you can do anything that you put your mind to and with God anything is possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Athens there are different restaurants to go out to eat. Bowling or a movie is another option. If you’re a Georgia Bulldogs fan the football games and downtown.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother (Debra) is my biggest supporter, She encouraged me and listened to me throughout the whole process. She is one of the most strongest people I know and has overcame so many things and by me watching her and everything she has been through really inspired me to become the person I am today and I am so grateful for her. I have family members and friends who support me and are rooting for me everyday and that really means a lot. I also have an amazing daughter (Emoni) who inspires me to keep going everyday and my goal is to show her that she can accomplish any goal no matter what people say or what obstacles may come and to never give up. I cannot forget about my cousin (Ricola) for helping me with her classes and helping me with the things I needed to know to get my business started and to keep it going. The number one person I give all the credit to is God!! Without him none of this would be possible.
