We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Vudu Spellz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ Vudu, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Both my Grandfather’s on both sides of my family were Entrepreneurs and owned their own businesses. They were also both pastors and also had their own churches and being my own boss just ran in my blood. In respect to the music business I always knew the music game was 90% business and 10% talent. I wanted to be in the position to control my own destiny. My motto is “I will work with you, but I will never work for anyone.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
People always are curious what’s the meaning behind my name Vudu Spellz. My definition is “putting you in a spell with my music and my Djing. It’s definitely and intense natural high to Dj for crowds of people and control the vibe and the energy in the room. Djing is my first love but I was blessed to get my first official professional track placement in 2007 on Chingy’s album, followed by several songs with Ludacris, DTP, Jamie Foxx, Shawnna, Do Or Die, R. Kelly and many more. I was blessed to receive my 1st platinum plaque with Chingy and Luda the same year of 2007 in the midst of relocating to Las Vegas right before NBA all star weekend and the time frame of the Grammys in which the song “Georgia” I produced for Ludacris ft Jamie Foxx and Field Mob was nominated for a Grammy. I also had the the first song on Ludacris’ Release Therapy album which won a Grammy for rap album of the year.

What makes me different from other producers is that I have a gumbo type production style as well as my ear for spinning when I Dj. Being raised in the Chicago area gave me exposure to a melting pot of music from every coast and every genre and when I put my spell on my music you can here the magic I’ve conjured up with Influences from many places.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Sin City Las Vegas, there are endless things to get into and many options of things to do and enjoy. A week isn’t long enough to even get a taste but I would definitely have to put some of our awesome food destinations on the the list just to get the ball rolling. We definitely have to hit the Vegas strip and downtown Freemont. I’m a Dj on Vegas station Power 88 so I would be putting my guests in tune with our events and places my team and I would be Djing.

Monday we’re hitting Reggae Mondays with NotaboiDj and Paradise Place Jamaican Restaurant.

Tuesday and Wednesday we’re hitting up Taco Tuesdays and Game Night Wednesday with my people over at Mariposa.

Thursday we’re pulling up to support Dj Slim and my 5th Element Hip Hop podcast family at Ninja Karoke downtown

Friday my guests would have a backstage all access VIP experience with Me and Dj Pharoah, DJ Jimbrowski and Notaboidj from Power 88 spinning at the Railhead for Freestyle Fridays inside Boulder Station Casino. Hosted by Ambeezy, Nik at Nite and Ms Angela B Vip from Power 88.

Saturday I’m also Djing and hosting our Throwback Saturdays event 55th floors up at the Ghostbar at the Palms Casino. The rooftop view up there is insane and we turn up with Dj Sidekick and the rest of my Power 88
Family including our station manager Craig Knight.

Sunday we’re probably going to check out a gentleman’s club or 2 or 3 and have my man Gastinel White cook us up some authentic and amazing Cajun food from Gastinels Cajun Kitchen for our Sunday Dinner fix.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I want to shotout Daiyon for shouting me out and giving me this opportunity to share my story and show love to others. I would definitely like to show love to Shondrae “Bangladesh” Crawford and Ludacris for believing in me and providing me an opportunity as a producer to launch my career and my journey in music as well as the Dj World. Definitely have to acknowledge and recognize my former manager Mil Tickit for being the ultimate plug and my Uncle Garnell for planting the DJ catalyst in me.
