Meet MXTRMOM | visual artist + producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with MXTRMOM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MXTRMOM, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“you are exactly where you’re supposed to be” is a favorite because it reminds me to be present and thankful of existing in the now. I can get real caught up on my own timeline, measuring success by comparing myself to others. When I keep in mind that i’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, I free myself of the constraints and comparisons.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a visual artist, my inspiration stems from cartoons and comic – but also ne0-expressionism and abstract media. The hardest part about being self-taught is trying to juggle progress with style. I would say my art right now focuses on the many emotions that come with growing through life as a Black queer person. I’m excited about where my style is headed – i’m diving deeper into comics, identifying how best to keep ya’ll engaged 🙂 I also want to always accurately reflect where I’m at in my life, and the last 3 years have been the most challenging, I’ve had reassess my whole identity due to grief, but also due to change in general. I have been taking my time in articulating that visually, focusing more on the auditory – my beats. My beats tell their own story, inspired by cartoons, DJ Screw, and Soon the two will cross, I’m excited to share that, maybe I can grab that adult swim bumper I’ve been dreaming of. I’ve learned to believe in the process and let go of my own idea of how things should be. It’s challenging because my way of coping with stressful times is overthinking and not trusting where I am. That’s why “you’re exactly where you should be” is important to me cause otherwise I’d unravel lol.
I want the world to know that MXTRMOM will always make a way to create, and will always provide.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really enjoy walking the Belt line with my wife, there’s so much to look at and it’s connected to different parts of the city so you can get a lot of scenery in. I’m able to get some really good audio footage for my beats out there because of all the different noises and activities
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my wife, Levi, who never stops encouraging me to believe in myself. They believe in me deeply – we wouldn’t be here in Atlanta without them convincing me that it wasn’t silly to pursue my creative career. They help me realize so many of my ideas, and being loved so fully boosts my confidence which I hope is reflected in what I create. I also just love experiencing life alongside them, and so even when I’m my most frustrated by what’s happening around me I’m able to create from love and appreciation
