We had the good fortune of connecting with Mavis Poole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mavis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Everyone sings. However, everyone isn’t a brand on stage promoting their craft as their business. I wanted to perform and create music as a part of my business, not just a hobby. So, while there is much to learn, I’m doing so not just as a performer, but as Mavis SWAN Poole Music, LLC.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is the fact that I’m the only ME in this world! I’m the only ME that will ever exist. So, the way I hear, feel, write, and produce music is reflective of that fact. My approach to my music is very authentic and genuine to my person and all of her experiences.

I am most proud of the fruits that have come from trusting myself and my guides. I am extremely proud of my persistence and fortitude.

The way I got to where I am today is a mixture of learning from hard life lessons, being bold enough to make choices, listening to advice from wise souls, trusting my intuition, and doing a hell of a lot of hard work. No back doors and shortcuts.

Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are:

1) Nothing before it’s time. (Steve Cromity)

2) ALWAYS BE YOURSELF (God/dess)

3) My silence will never protect me. (Audre Lorde)

4.) Don’t assume. (Erionna Lucas)

5) Be Bold and Brave Unapologetically. (Dr. JoAnne Woodard)

6) “Give it all you got, Mae!” (My Mama, Jennie Poole)

7) You don’t have to accept everything, but you do have to tolerate things. (My Daddy, Jerry Poole, Sr.)

8) You’ve got to be particular. (Grandma Murray)

As far as what I want the world to know about me, my brand, and my story: I want the world to know that I did things my way. And that’s not to offend anyone, it’s to defend me and the choices that I make as a human and an Artist. I want you to know that I come in peace, with much experience, love, deep thought, and insight, and hope to leave some of these things you through my music. I want you to know my heart and the way I process the world through my music. Lastly, I want the world to prepare themselves for my single “Every Man Aint The Same” that will be released on 1/22/24 on all Digital streaming platforms. My attempt and reminder to restore the faith in some of our good men that we punish for the sins of previous men that hurt us. Check it out!!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! Grab a seat…it’s gonna be long! Lol.

My Parents. They have been the grounding factor in my life. They have supported me, advised me, and most importantly PRAYED for me as I’ve explored my gift of music around the world.

King (10) and Queen Aria (7), my children. My heartbeat. My babies. My teachers. My “why”.

Queen Burgundy Locs. She not only watches my babies while I travel, but she cooks for all of us. As my daddy says, “The Sista can burn”! Lol. She supports me mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and musically. A rare gem in my life.

Dr. Ira Wiggins, Arnold George (RIP), Dr. Lenora Hammonds, Dr. Michael Mossman, and all of my college professors that believed in me and created opportunities for me.

My Middle and High School Students whose love for music connect us regardless of age.

My bestie Eve who actually told me I could sing, and my bestie Ronte who pushed me to become a Music Major. My dear DeShunda, who has always had an eclectic palette for music.

Musicians and Artists that dare to be their authentic selves.

Fans, family, and friends.
