Meet Kareem Williams | Speaker & Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kareem Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kareem, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
My family is originally from the beautiful island of Barbados, however I was born in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a Caribbean household came with many influences and values that are unique. Caribbean parents are usually very strict. They want things done a certain way. They expect the best from you at all times and if you mess up in any way, they will know without even being in the same room. Though this is not the best environment for a child’s emotional development, it did make me produce growth in many areas. I understood how important it was to do my best and the value of excellence. I came to realize that good work ethic was not a quality everyone had. I still see myself being my hardest critic and there are times it’s worked in my favor and times that it hasn’t. Overall, I am thankful for my upbringing and how it’s helped shape me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What makes my work unique is the topics that I address. It’s not easy to talk about porn addiction and depression, neither do most people want to talk about those issues. I’ve come to understand that my personal struggles are what make my story worth telling. I can proudly say that I was able to bring my experiences to life in my book, “I Was Angry at God.” My journey has not been an easy one, but it has been worth the personal development. I’ve learned that in order to overcome the challenges that I experienced along the way I had to pivot. Pivoting can determine if you make it to where you want to be or not. When I speak at different venues, I have to pivot to appropriately address each audience. I want the world to know that I will not disappoint when speaking on mental health and spiritual health.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places we’d eat: No Mas Mexican restaurant, Italian Oven, International house of Roti, Atlanta Breakfast Club, Toast on Lenox, The Real Milk and Honey, Rio Italian Ice. Places we’d go: A live concert, Kat’s Cafe, Sweet Georgia Juke Joint, Andretti’s, The Battery, Ponce City Market, Sky Zone, church, the aquarium.
To me the most exciting place to meet interesting people is anywhere there is live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to mention my mom and the way she opened my eyes to always finding another way to make things possible. If there was ever a problem, she found a way to solve it. She is relentless. Secondly, my wife has been not only my support, but my encouragement. In this season she has shown me how love can change into what we need it to be. There is no success of Kareem Williams without Gabrielle Williams. Finally, I’d like to recognize God for always being there and never leaving me in my time of struggle.
