We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Nadeau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I look at risk as making a bet on myself, and I’m not going to make a bet with bad cards. So when I do take risks, I make sure I have the best cards possible. What I mean by having the best cards is that I thoroughly understand the circumstances surrounding the risk. For example, when I decided to be a Colorist, it was a huge risk; or, as I see it, a huge bet. I knew I had a ton to learn. So I worked hard to know as much as I can about the craft and continue to do so. I knew there were incredibly talented Colorists that would be my competition. So I studied their work and figured out how to make working with me better than working with them. I knew being a Colorist was very hardware dependent. So I saved up enough to afford a color grading suite. Now, I’m a Colorist with clients all over the world. I’ve found that the big difference between playing cards and taking a risk is that in the latter I can control the cards in my hand by working to be as prepared and knowledgable as possible in the circumstances that surround the risk. After I’ve done that, I’m mostly betting on myself, and I’ll take that bet any day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m innately a thinker and tinkerer, but, for me, there’s a feeling when the color is just right. If the feeling isn’t there, I know there’s still work to do. In addition to my sensibility, my work ethic and knowledge are what sets me apart from others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them on a tour of all the craft breweries.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Andrew Fuhr. He’s one of the smartest people, and most cinema-literate person, I’ve met. He is a brilliant empath and often knows things about people they have yet to discover. He gave me my first big break and was a mentor for a number of years that instilled the mentality of doing what’s best for the project, or team, instead of doing what’s best for oneself.
