We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is a bible verse that comes from Philippians 4:13 which says: I can do All things, through Christ who strengthens me. Ever since I can remember, I carried this verse with me rather it be writing it down on my paper before taking a test or whispering it to myself before treating a medically complex patient. This verse gives me the confidence, knowing that God will give me the strength I need to conquer any task given to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a board-certified Internal Medicine Physician who completed my residency amidst the challenges of the pandemic. The driving force behind my journey originated from my aunt, who lost her battle with Sickle Cell Anemia when I was in 8th grade. My entire medical path has been shaped by the desire to make a positive impact on those around me, much like the care her doctors provided for her and my family.

My entry into the field of medicine was far from straightforward. My initial application to medical school was met with a rejection, yet I understood that this setback didn’t define my narrative. I chose to pursue a master’s degree in Medical Science at Hampton University, using it as a stepping stone to ultimately enter medical school upon completing my studies.

Throughout this transformative journey, I’ve been fortunate to have exceptional mentors who’ve provided steadfast guidance. Recognizing the pivotal role that mentorship played in my own achievements, I, along with my esteemed colleague, Dr. Desiree Leach, co-founded a nonprofit named Color of Medicine. This initiative took shape while I was concurrently pursuing my Internal Medicine residency in Chicago, Il. The fundamental mission of Color of Medicine is to champion diversity in medicine and STEM domains, with a special emphasis on empowering underrepresented minorities.

My fervent commitment lies in bolstering cultural proficiency and addressing the health disparities rooted in racial inequities within marginalized communities. This dedication drives me to tirelessly work towards crafting a healthcare landscape that is inclusive and just.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents, grandparents, and friends- who never let me quit on myself, always pushed me to be a better version of myself each day and to remind me that there is always someone looking up to you.
