We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Nicholas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I embarked on the journey of starting my own business as a tribute to my father’s legacy. With him establishing the company in 1974, I saw an opportunity to carry forward his entrepreneurial spirit. Although the business initially revolved around Caribbean paraphernalia, my fervor for health and wellness compelled me to reshape its trajectory. Guided by a deep-seated passion, I embraced the responsibility of steering the company towards a new direction. By infusing my vision into the business, I strive to honor my father’s foundation while paving the way for innovative approaches to health and well-being.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I operate a health and wellness shop that stands out through its commitment to the community. We not only offer a variety of health products but also host regular vendor events and community initiatives. What sets us apart is our unwavering dedication to exceptional customer service and the genuine connections we build with our customers, treating them like family. We take pride in sourcing quality products at reasonable prices, emphasizing our role in uplifting and enhancing the lives of our community members. The journey to where we are today hasn’t been easy, especially as a woman-owned and black-owned business in a competitive local landscape. As a single mother, balancing responsibilities has been challenging, but I’ve leveraged a strong work ethic and resourcefulness to navigate obstacles. The pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, but our focus on our mission allowed us to pivot successfully. A supportive staff has been invaluable, as they help maintain operations when I can’t be present. Through determination, confidence in my decisions, and strategic resource utilization, I’ve learned to overcome challenges and continue growing. Our story is one of resilience, community empowerment, and a commitment to making a positive impact.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area, I’d make sure they had an unforgettable time exploring the vibrant neighborhoods of Brooklyn. One of my favorite things about this place is the abundance of local and black-owned businesses that I love to support. As a vegetarian, I’d take them to enjoy the delicious offerings at places like Ital Kitchen, Ras Plant Based, Aunts et Uncles, and Punchline Juice Bar. While my nights out are limited due to being a single mother, occasional visits to Dekalb Market or Time Out Market would offer a taste of the local scene. A must-do would be attending First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum, immersing us in the rich cultural and artistic fabric of the borough. And we’d definitely explore Tompkins Ave, with its array of black-owned businesses and lively outdoor market on certain Sundays, encapsulating the true spirit of the community.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father’s unwavering determination has been a wellspring of inspiration in my life. Witnessing him take a bold leap by establishing his own business during the 70s taught me the value of calculated risks and the rewards they can bring. His altruistic nature shone through as he extended his hand to numerous individuals, empowering them to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys. His profound impact on others resonated deeply within me, propelling me to strive for greatness and contribute positively to the lives of those around me. His relentless work ethic was truly unparalleled, leaving an indelible mark on my character. Regardless of the circumstances, he remained a beacon of support, readily offering assistance to anyone in need, regardless of their background. Through his actions and guidance, my father has not only shaped the entrepreneur in me but has also fostered qualities that have enriched my identity and enabled my growth.
