We had the good fortune of connecting with Adi Kaur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
What was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business came from mentors and family members that already were self-employed and business owners. I never considered myself a businesswoman, my only goal was to teach yoga classes. Fast forward to today, I own Birmingham’s first black-owned yoga studio and registered yoga teacher training hosting monthly, quarterly, and yearly training. We work with disenfranchised communities and individuals empowering them with various wellness and self-regulating tools.
What should our readers know about your work?
What I want readers to know about my work is that it’s only the beginning! In a population of 80% black and brown people of color here in Birmingham, the absence of a wellness space for the BIPOC community is troubling. My work has always been to empower people of color with the necessary tools to immobilize without fear. This April marks 1 full year of our gofundme being up and active where we raising $20,000 to renovate our studio.
What I want readers to know about my work is that I have dedicated my life to community activism and organizing. The 530-square-foot studio space sits directly in the back of my home. That is what I want folks to know about my work. I eat sleep and breathe community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visit me some of the local spots I would take them to would be a dance and drum class hosted by an incredible West African Dance and Drum Company, Sahi On Ko Djony. After that, we would probably be hungry and in need of some good food. We would head over to Bay Leaf on the southside for some traditional Indian food. Of course, we would check out some yoga classes from some of the students that graduated from THEBLKYOGITRIBE 200-hour training. Those classes would be chair yoga, restorative yoga, and gentle yoga classes. Last but not least we certainly have to visit the botanical garden and spend time in stillness journaling about all of our adventures.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out Josephine Stokes, my grandmother. I am nothing without her love, her wisdom, and her understanding. She was diagnosed with cancer shortly after my grandfather Paul Stokes passed away from cancer two years ago. I shout her out because she was the woman who gave me my first yoga book and every time I learn something new she is always so excited to hear about it. I have made it this far in life because of her prayers and her support, I give thanks and praise to the highest for Josephine Stokes.
