We had the good fortune of connecting with Yuhan Zhu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yuhan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For me personally, I prefer to focus on stories about families. In China, where I grew up, the idea is that a strong small family leads to a strong large family, with the small family referring to our own family, including our parents and relatives, and the large family representing the nation or even the world as a global community of humankind. Often, the stories of the larger community are reflected in the stories of the small family, and by analyzing and understanding these stories, we can help individuals empathize with the emotions of others, paving the way for future communication and collaboration.

Similarly, I am also willing to share my own views on family from different cultural backgrounds, whether it’s to gain empathy or receive different perspectives, as they will enrich my life experiences. Expressing myself with the most genuine emotions and thoughts is what I pursue in art.

My parents and my family are my strongest support. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to pursue my dreams, study abroad, and explore this different world. Although I may have had resistance towards my parents when I was younger, as I grew older, I began to understand and become more accepting. In my short film, “Countdown,” I also depicted this process of going from misunderstanding to understanding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When it comes to editing, there are many editing software options to choose from, and each one requires familiarity to complete the job. However, it is crucial to master one of them, which will become your ace in the hole. Expand your arsenal, watch and learn more. Life is not always smooth sailing, but with strong professional skills and a humble attitude, you will shine.

As a film director and editor, I always prioritize emotion and creating a sense of empathy for the audience. I want the audience to feel like they are the protagonist and to empathize with them. Similarly, when telling stories about what I have observed or experienced, often insignificant details can produce a strong resonance. This resonance is the unspoken communication between me and the audience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Without a doubt, the aquarium is a top choice for experiencing nature and seeing cute dolphins and penguins, making for a relaxing day. And right next door is the World of Coca-Cola, where you can try almost every Coca-Cola product and some surprising flavors. The botanical garden is absolutely beautiful, especially during special events when there is a unique atmosphere; definitely worth visiting.

If you like Korean BBQ, you have come to the right place, as there are countless options here. Personally, I really like 678 Korean BBQ, where you must try the grilled beef short ribs. If you want to try Chinese-style BBQ, I recommend Kochi Maru, where the grilled skewers and pork belly are too authentic. Also, Java Saga has the best popcorn chicken and spicy chicken. And don’t forget Yummy Spicy; they have some excellent spicy Chinese food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are too many people that I need to thank, including all the friends, teachers, and relatives I have met along the way in my personal growth. Their encouragement and support have been particularly important. Even those who have criticized or disagreed with me have taught me to work harder and achieve more.

I am grateful to the professors at the University of Washington who introduced me to the film industry; I thank the professors at SCAD for teaching me professional knowledge and endless patience. And of course, my parents and relatives, who have always supported and loved me. Without your support, I would not have achieved anything. I love you all!
