Meet Brandon Thomas | Human Health & Performance Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, what principle do you value most?

That I follow the teachings laid by the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe He is the Messiah and that only He holds the key to the wisdom of how human beings are to behave. I believe that by following the teachings of the Lord everything else will fall into place. Bible says to seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things shall be given to you besides.

What should our readers know about your business?

My business is called Awaken Performance Training. At Awaken we offer elite human performance training and coaching for both general fitness clients and athletes. And I kind of separate my business into those two aspects.  With training sessions offered for both the regular everyday person that has a 9-5 job and young aspiring athletes. I believe that our society has become way too sedentary over the past 100 years and I do not think this is the way that God designed humans to behave. The Bible says that “a healthy body is above all the riches in the world.” I believe that God designed the human body with His intelligent design and gave unto the human body tremendous feats of strength and beauty that we all are capable of. The problem is that we must WORK to achieve this. Which is what I believe we are here to do is, WORK. But in todays society, we have become slack in the way that we care for our body from a physical fitness standpoint. Obviously, there are several factors for each individual that  contribute to this societal epidemic but as a whole we are not as physically active as we once were. And we are seeing the dangerous side effects caused by living a sedentary lifestyle unfolding right in front of our eyes. To me there is no better way to honor God than to take care of the body that he designed for you for Him to reside in. And I try through my workouts to constantly show people the amazing things their bodies are capable of. So many of us in our fitness routines as we age become complacent and stuck and we stick to just walking on the treadmill or doing a basic barbell bench press and we forget to explore different movements and run and move and jump around. That’s what I try to do is design highly effective and creative workouts that move the body in numerous ways that will not only make you leaner, and stronger but also show you how to control your movements and how to do movements and get into positions you never thought you could. I have a degree in Exercise Science from the University of Georgia, I am yoga certified, and have been an athlete my whole life, so I kind of draw from all my experiences when designing a workout and different movements. Most people tell me I’m crazy and want to know where I come up with all this stuff?!

On the athlete side, I mainly up to this point have worked with young, adolescent high school baseball players. I call what I do with them baseball performance. The goal is to get them throwing the ball harder, hitting the ball harder, running faster and improving their baseball fundamentals. So we are not only doing baseball specific lifts and explosive sprint work to make them stronger and faster but also throwing abs hitting baseballs all within the same session. Most of the kids tell me that they’ve never done anything like what I do before, and it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever done. I try my best to teach them how to work and show them what it truly means to be great.

I am most proud of the impact I am able to have on the people that i train. Whether that be helping a general fitness client lose weight, or get off their blood pressure medication. Or taking one of baseball players from the age of 12 and watching them develop into a young man that signs a college scholarship and goes off to play college baseball. Just helping them achieve their goals or improve their quality of life is what makes me most proud.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I am probably not this best person to answer this question. I am a homebody and if I am not on the clock training clients or working myself out I prefer to be at my apartment just relaxing. If I do go out, I enjoy being active and going for walks in nature. In the Atlanta area I really enjoy the trails at Stone Mountain, Arabia Mountain and SweetWater Creek so I would have to take them to check out those trails. I also travel into Atlanta almost every Sunday and take a boxing class at Pepper Boxing, so they would have to come with me to that as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

God and His Word. The Bible. It is the only book that man ever needs to read. It is the only book that shows a man how he should conduct himself properly. It is the only book that holds the key to Life. I would also like to thank my parents for raising me up on the teachings of the Bible and for planting the seed of God in me at a young age. I would not be where I am today without the example they have set and without all of their unconditional love and support. They raised me in a biblical house and at times in my life I did not understand it or want to adhere to their “rules” but as I’ve gotten older I understand more clearly and become more grateful of them.
