We had the good fortune of connecting with Darry Lighten and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darry, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I don’t know where the feeling came from, but I’ve always felt the desire and responsibility of earning my own and never wanting to be in the position of depending on others for my survival. So much so that even when I didn’t have, I would simply do without. However at the same time of experiencing the many years of being dedicated and a hard worker it became aparant that you are only worth the need of the moment no matter how much you contributed to a particular company. This in turn made me realize that the best way to build on your own foundation and prosper is to have your own and build upon it.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After leaving the military I worked for the department of corrections in Joliet for 4 years as a corrections officer. During that time, I got interested in music and began playing keyboards in a band. As the years went by, I became more interested in music and decided to move to California and go back to college. While in California I played in a group doing original tunes. After being there for about two years I was signed by Sin City Records as a producer and moved to Las Vegas. While there I started a singing group named “OTP” playing keyboards. Over the years while performing I started to gain interest in the things that took place behind the scenes and started up a company called U S International Records with Oscar Lewis. This led to me paying more attention to the business and production development parts of the entertainment Industry which eventually led to the creation of DigiWorld Entertainment LLC. DigiWorld is a filming and Entertainment establishment. It’s concept is based on having the ability to create a product from conception to finalized product under one roof. The formation of this concept was developed from life experiences as an artist, producer and business owner. There’s a lot talented individual that constantly run up against multiple barriers of lack of funds and knowledge to being victims of scammers and con artist. Coming from that environment we wanted to create an environment where an artist can not only afford but be able experience a created environment that allows them to use the full extent of their creative ability when it comes to creating audio and visual works of art all at one location from concept to finalized product. Digiworld is presently opening up it’s new location in Georgia and has several creative products on the table from Talk-show to films.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being new to a city that has so much to offer I feel I’m still a novice when it comes to creating the itinerary for the excursions of Atlanta because there is still so much for me to explore myself as well. However, I will give it a try.
To give an overall understanding of the city I would start with a site seeing tour of various locations. Then throughout the week we would visit places like Stone Mountain, CNN, Midtown, Nikolai’s Roof, Fox Theatre, New Theatre in the Square and hopefully to one of the many festivals that go on here year round.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To the dedicated mentors of the Upward Bound Program at Lewis University in Romeoville Illinois that I attended back in 1978 to 1981. It was because of them that I was able to explore beyond the boarders of my community and learned the importance and value of being a person of knowledge.
