We had the good fortune of connecting with Terran Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terran, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as being necessary for growth. The thing about it is, that it’s like stepping into the unknown. As a person I had assess if I was willing to be a thrill seeker, and thankfully I was. Taking risks for me personally has led to living a life that I imagined, but to see it in fruition is very gratifying considering what it took. This whole journey of entrepreneurship, thus far has been about taking risks and sacrificing comforts in order to grow. Essentially it’s what made me become an entrepreneur in the first place and create the life I wanted to have.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Herb’N Eden is an all natural body care products company, that my husband and I started in 2015. I was looking for a skill to learn, that was valuable and would get time into selling at farmer’s markets. After reading a book with crafts, I came across soap making. It was really different for me because I didn’t know soap could be made and with natural ingredients at that. So, from the first batch I’ve just consistently made soap over the years and continued to scale the business. What sets us/me apart, is that we’ve documented a lot of our business journey along the way and have always remained transparent about the progress and operations. more importantly, I’ve always remained true to myself and my mission. Herb’ N Eden was started with sustainability in mind, and that’s still at the forefront of our values. I believe that’s how we got to where we are today through story telling along the way, as well as having a dope product. We’ve been in business for 5 years and it certainly has not been easy. No part of it is easy whatsoever, and tat’s what makes it rewarding. We overcame the challenges, by not being afraid to do what it takes to make it happen. You set a goal and a vision and you do what it takes to get there, and accept that it will take sacrifice. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way. Trust the process is one that comes first to mind, especially considering where we are now, and where we will be in the future. I am so grateful to be along this creative entrepreneurial journey. Now that we have a warehouse ad retail store with staff, I’ve had to learn a lot about leadership and creating a good work culture. Just to name a few, but I’ve really learned a lot about myself, and of course I will continue to learn until my last breath. This work everyday allows me to tap into my power and creativity, plus make a successful living from it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends are visiting from out of town we would have to hit up Sweetwater Creek park for hiking and chilling in nature. More than likely would hit up Ponce City Market to ride scooters on the Beltline and check out all the sights there. For food, my favorite spots are Bahel Ethiopian Restaurant, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream for late night sweets, Agave restaurant to see my favorite bartender Lisa and her custom Mona Lisa drink. At some point we would also have to hang out in the Highlands and go to Sotto Sotto for a handmade pasta dinner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My amazing husband Quinton Lewis, my business and life partner through it all. Shoutout to my family and friends for their support and love.
