We had the good fortune of connecting with Malarie Holt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malarie, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote would have to be “Delayed doesn’t mean denied”, it reflects my journey. Most people look at delays as set backs, but I beg to differ. I know that everything happens in time, nothing ever happens out of season. Those delays,are God’s way of really preparing you because you aren’t quite ready.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I really enjoy the art of being creative for photo shoots, weddings, wig units and educating. I think it’s the endless possibilities for me, not being boxed in. Being my authentic self, having integrity and always wanting to give quality is what separates me. Nowadays, it’s about fast money, doing it for the gram and having the title of being called a celebrity hairstylist. My goal is to service my customers how I would like to be serviced, no matter the status. What I do is bigger than a business, it’s my ministry. It’s the passion I have behind whatever I do.

I’ve been doing hair since 2007, I started out doing hair in my bedroom at my mom’s house. My specialty was braids at the time. I did hair throughout my years in high school, built a solid clientele and made what I thought was good money at that time. I graduated from high school in 2010, not sure of what I wanted to do.I had so many people in my ear saying that I should go to a four-year college and hair wouldn’t bring any long term benefits. I enrolled in the Cosmetology program at Virginia College only to get pregnant three months in and ended up quitting. I thought my life was over, little did I know the journey had just begun. Made a promise to myself once my daughter turned three I would get back into school and I did just that. I graduated and became a licensed cosmetologist in 2015. After becoming licensed, my family and I moved to Georgia for better opportunities. We moved and got pregnant with our 2nd child, struggling at its best. Later enrolled in an Institution in Georgia to get my instructors license and had to drop out, things weren’t working out like I had planned. I remember traveling back and forth from Georgia to Alabama every other weekend to do hair, being on the road at 3 am sometimes, overworking and overbooking while pregnant. We ended up moving back to Alabama in 2017. After having my 3rd child in 2018, I knew that traveling wasn’t going to work. I rented out a suit for a year, salon life wasn’t working for my family. I left the salon in September 2019 and became a wig maker. Due to everything that was going on at that time, I decided to go back to school and get my instructor’s license. I finished the program on January 15th of this year, now I’m currently licensed and plan on opening up my own institution in the future.
I would describe my journey as a mixture of smooth sailing and a bunch of potholes. Prime example, I started my wig business literally when the world shut down, 2020 was the worst year financially but also humbling. I think 2020 was a year of reflecting and weighing my options. I started theinstructors program in 2021 and had to sacrifice my wig business for six months, this was the hardest six months for me mentally and financially. Imagine having three kids, husband, business, going to school, having to drive 45 minutes away five days out of the week, cooking, cleaning and homework. Somedays I didn’t know if I was going or coming, I was miserable. I had to go through to get too, and I am ok with that because nothing worth having comes easy. I’ve experienced rejection on numerous occasions, but I know that was God’s way of protecting me. My life has been far from easy and that’s ok because all of this was a part of my journey. Romans 8:28
Always remember, you have to put in the work, be prepared for what you’ve prayed for because faith without work is dead. Life isn’t always easy, so don’t get caught up in what social media says your journey should look like. Don’t be afraid to rebuild and take chances. Don’t allow others to dictate the path you choose when God gave you the heads up, always know that God’s timing is ALWAYS PERFECT and my favorite “Delayed doesn’t mean denied”.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to first shoutout God because literally I wouldn’t have made it through any of what I’ve gone through without him. Next, would be my family because it takes a village. Being a spouse and a mother of three support is definitely needed when trying to chase a dream. I must say in this season my family has shown me that they are the real MVPs and I truly appreciate them so much.
