Meet Julian Scott Bryan | Multi-Instrumentalist, Songwriter & Vocalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julian Scott Bryan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julian Scott, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I continuously strive to learn something new every day. Whether it is about the craft of writing, playing and recording music or seeking nourishment from the spiritual and philosophical thought that has been passed down throughout the ages, I really love learning about the amazing ideas we as humans are gifted with and capable of. Our current age is an age of free and almost infinite amounts knowledge. We can find information pertaining to just about any given subject within seconds. It still blows my mind that this has all came about in my lifetime. I enjoy sifting through the seas of information, trying things out through experimentation, using ideas that help achieve whatever goal I may have, and putting them in my mental tool kit for later use. I would say the most important value in life is to always keep learning, trying, and applying what we learn in the pursuit of becoming our best possible selves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a local musician, songwriter, and music teacher. I am active in several Atlanta based bands and released my first solo album earlier this year. I am a drummer by trade, however I also play keys, guitar, bass, congas and other percussions. Some might call me a multi-instrumentalist, but my thought is that everything is a drum with different timbral options to utilize. My aforementioned album, entitled “Pressure”, is the first musical offering that I solely wrote, performed, produced, recorded, and mixed everything entire project. It is also the first time I’ve released under my own name. It was a challenge to make because I usually have the luxury of relying on the vast talents and ideas of all of my other band mates in the various other projects that I have been involved with. It was definitely a cathartic, yet super vulnerable experience for me. I learned so much about my inner creative workings and weaknesses during this process of making this album. I am ecstatic to be on the other side now with a renewed confidence in ability and a foundation laid for my future solo and collaborative records. Currently I play with Bird City Revolutionaries (Drums, Vocals, lyricist), Wren & the Wravens (Drums, vocals), Lightning Orchestra (Percussion, Robot Drums, and Drum set), BAS Relief (Congas, Percussion), and my solo recording project under Julian Scott Bryan. From my early childhood, I have been obsessed with and hyper connected with music. I am incredibly grateful to be able to continue to get to be a creative and have music as my primary job. Along 20+ year musical journey I have learned resilience, discipline, adaptability, and gratitude along the way. From my humble beginnings in the rural Appalachian Mountains of Virginia to playing 100+ shows a year around the southeast region (pre-pandemic of course) has been an amazing way to float down the river of life!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, I would take them to my favorite gritty watering hole, Elliott Street Pub in Castleberry Hill. I would also show them around EAV, Little 5 Points, and rounding out in East Point for some burgers, beers, and music. I would also take them around to some of the historical places from the Civil Rights Movement. I’d probably drag them for a day trip up to the Georgia Guide Stones or the Etowah burial mounds for a little taste of the non-metro Atlanta experience. Maybe a day in Athens, who knows?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to all the local Atlanta musicians and creatives whom I have had the fortune to work with, share ideas, and learn from. Also, I would like to say thanks for all the inspiration I have received from musicians and artists all over the world.
