We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was pretty much a whole process. I was always into doing hair since I was 14 years old. When I went to college I used to braid hair inside of my dorm room and I fell in love with doing so that it became a lifestyle for me. Braiding was very therapeutic to me. When I started working at Walmart I used to always have hair on my mind. I had to make a hard decision which was to quit my Job and braid hair full time and that I did. I started manifesting & journaling and allow God to lead me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It all started when I was a little 14 year old teenager. I was always into doing Barbie dolls hair growing up so that kinda stuck with me as I got older. Fast forward, I started doing quick styles like quick weaves, ponytails, and wigs. My mom was the 1st person hair I did and I immediately was happy about the outcome. I started watching different YouTube videos on styles that I wanted to re-Create and then I started doing those styles on myself. Once I graduated from highschool I attended Troy University and there is when I really tapped into my gift. I call it a gift because everything just started to come naturally like I was born to do hair. I had colleagues who would let me do they hair for a small fee but the money wasn’t important to me I just really enjoyed the beauty of it all. I did not know how to braid at all so I would ask my clients to come with their hair braided already.
I started working at a local beauty supply store in Troy later in that year and it was a very special person who walked in.
It was an elderly lady who asked” Baby, what are you doing”? I replied” Trying to learn how to braid”! She said” Baby you cannot do anything without God, so ask him to give you the strength and the ability to move forward”.
After that message I was stunned. I never saw that lady ever again but her advice replayed in my head over and over.

Afterwards, I begin to pray my way through each and every time I attempted to braid hair and it was like magic after that.

I then started to ask my clients to let me braid their hair because I started to believe in myself and I did just that. I became better and better each time.

What sets me apart from others is that I am patient and I have a passion for what I do. I love all things beauty. All of My clients are beautiful but sometimes their crown might be upside down. I can be a mentor, hairstylist, sister and friend all in one. I love it when my clients are comfortable, so I present a welcoming spirit for everyone.

I got to where I’m at today because of God and consistency. You cannot be successful if you’re not consistent.

No it was not easy. I had setbacks, obstacles interference, and trials that would take over but I did not allow that to stop me from my dream.

Along the way I learn and is still learning that you can not always have it together. I will always remain teachable because that’s how I will always grow.

I want the world to know that I take pride in everything that I offer. Never get too comfortable with what you have because you can always have more.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my story to my mother, Wanda Chillous. My mom is an example of strong, powerful, and fearless. Growing up she would always say “ Joy you have to put yourself first and love on Joy”. She always pushes me to do my very best and believe in myself. She motivate me when I’m feeling unmotivated and encourage me when I feel detached from my goals. I absolutely thank her so much because she still do the same till this day.
