We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodeline Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodeline, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was actually our students, who happen to be our customers, that led to the idea. I’ve always naturally enjoyed mentoring you youths and began to do so as a physician assistant (PA) to students wanting to become PAs. From interacting with hundreds of students, I noticed they still had many of the problems I faced with navigating the sector and understanding how healthcare works. And that’s when I thought of the idea to directly connect students with mentors and working professionals to help in their transition into healthcare.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the founder of Medsembly. Medsembly prepares aspiring healthcare students, that generally lack guidance, for a career in healthcare by directly connecting them with working professionals and peers targeted to help them succeed and make a smooth transition.
This all started because of my own challenges when I started in the medical field at 17. I did not know anyone in healthcare and made several mistakes both in college as I prepared to apply to schools and in my career, specifically as a new-grad. I found through mentoring that students still had the same problems I had despite a 10-year difference. I was compelled to finally solve this with Medsembly.
It was certainly not easy to found a start-up. As a first time founder, I made several mistakes and did not not what I was doing! The only thing that kept me going was having faith, remaining persistent, and not losing sight of the vision….I had many blows to my confidence (and still do), but, I keep reminding myself not to give up.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned as it relates to start-up companies, is to start small! This helps you to preserve money and not be wasteful. Start by solving one problem that your target customer has and build from there. Also, be frugal, especially if you are bootstrapping, find creative ways to market your business without draining your pockets. And finally, have a great team and amazing support system. Find a mentor as soon as you can that succeeded at what you are trying to do (does not have to be the same business idea or vertical). And, have a supportive team of friends and family that will be there to dry those tears, lift you up, and encourage you to keep going!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in metro-Atlanta and I loveeeee Atlanta, this city exudes Black Excellence. Although I don’t go out as much as I should, when I do go out, it is always somewhere in Buckhead. I enjoy going to brunch, nice dinners, and upscale lounges-that are not too crowded of course. My favorite brunch spot is Breakfast at Barney’s-I’ve never been on a weekend though because their line is no joke. Although I have not personally been, I heard Garden Room is nice. If they serve mimosas, then I’m there. The Capital Grille is my go-to for a nice dinner. The ConsuIate brings an amazing cultural experience. Kevin Rathbun Steak was also amazing! As far as lounges and getting drinks, Rock Steady is a nice vibe along with Whiskey Blue.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This shoutout out goes to my parents, Ronel and Gilberte Joseph. My parents are my BIGGEST supporters. I could tell them I want to go to the moon and they would help me build the rocket ship to get there. I attribute all my success to them, their belief in my dreams, pushing me to never stop going after my goals, and having my back every step of the way.
