We had the good fortune of connecting with William Currie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi William, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our partnership at Static Divergent Waves has always had the focus of independence – from music, to art, to marketing and merchandising. This is all focused around our website – staticdivergentwaves.com

We wanted to test our own limits and to prove that its possible to create success outside of the music industry’s major labels. By creating our own business it enables us to release what we want, when we want and how we want.

Despite the challenges that come with it – managing a stricter budget and handling the administrative aspects of the businesses – it has been worth it because at the end of the day we understand we own what we create.

With this ability we also provide an “SDW Affiliate” service that allows other artists and personalities gain success while remaining independent. Together, SDW and other artists work on projects – music, e-sports, etc. while sharing in the ownership, successes and gains from them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Although the focus of the art and creatives we make at SDW is music, we are trying to look much broader than that. At the end of the day we still consider ourselves an entertainment company, and that’s where we get the excitement and drive from.

The three partners at SDW ( WILL SEE, Ayo KO, DT ) all have very different paths to get to where we are. Each of us has a mix of knowledge gained through certifications, education, and self-learning. With the love we have for creating art – from music to visual, etc – we want to improve and learn new methods any way we can.

The biggest lesson to learn is to surround yourself with people who truly want to learn too. If someone is truly focused on learning then they will encourage the learning of those around them as well. When someone seems to be discouraging you from trying to improve its important to take note.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hard to say, but if we’re going with one packed day then I’d try to keep it all downtown. If they’re into history then there’s a lot of spots for that – even the Trap Music Museum. Could hit the zoo for a little bit. There’s enough studios to keep musicians happy, and by the end of the day catch whatever game or event is happening at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium or State Farm Arena.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When it comes to our inspiration I think its fair to say it varies. All three partners at SDW are fans of the newer generations of labels that have emerged under some musicians. Its important to watch and learn as much as you can – and seeing how labels like OVO, GOOD Music, and Dreamville all have taken different approaches helped shape how we wanted to approach it.

Just look at how Kanye West incorporates so much more into his business than the music while still keeping the feeling of it all connected. The drop of Donda 2 to work with and support the Stem player has many layers and lessons in that alone. Then, take a look at Dreamville and the approach the label has to dropping music. These massive collaborative albums that feel like a freestyle rap concert (ROTD, ROTD2, D-Day), are amazing for tying your artists into listeners’ algorithms
