We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Travers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Being a creative is more fulfilling than I can describe. Growing up I always put myself in the shoes of those who inspired me and eventually my heart sought out to make that my reality and inspire others as well. It made sense to me to do something I love as far as a career is concerned. I want to give others hope to make the most out of their talents and abilities because I believe what we do can be very rewarding if well-manoeuvred. The creative industry has so much untapped potential especially where I come from.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
‘Matt Travers’ is a character. He will work from dawn to dusk and still put in extra hours through the night to deliver his best and make you feel the passion and drive fueling the art centered around cultural amalgamation. He is an action-oriented dreamer who believes anything is possible therefore doesn’t give too much attention to the negatives in situations. Detaching myself from this character and appreciating the growth keeps me going to even do better as a person. Being able to balance everything going on in life is never easy but God and discipline have helped me get here. Understanding the weight of a brand forced me to be organised in how I build it up and manage it. I’m also better at handling external pressure because that’s one of the challenges I’ve faced since the start and I needed to deal with. As far as my story, I want the world to never lose faith. I want them to be tough despite whatever’s going on. We owe ourselves the responsibility to put our dreams or ideas into reality and take them as far as possible.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hopefully you have an appetite from the get-go because the first place to visit on the short list is Ugaroll. From any outlet, we could get ourselves the ‘rolex’ which is one of the most popular foods from Uganda. It’s also a personal favorite. Those calories need to be burnt afterwards so I’d recommend going for a walk around the city centre of Kampala. From the interactions with the people there to the places to see, you can get insight on how a section of the people go about their daily lives. The next day would be perfect for a trip to Jinja which has the source of the Nile. There’s lots of water activities to try out there like white water rafting, boat cruising and kayaking. Jinja is also home to popular events like the Nyege Nyege festival. Out of the capital city still, there’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (home to some of the last mountain gorillas on earth), Entebbe which has beaches by Lake Victoria and the islands on it such as Ssese. Sports lover or not, watching a rugby match is another amazing experience especially if it’s a big game. At Legends Rugby Grounds you can do so and grab great food too! Motiv is a hub for creatives that’s worth the visit as well. The facility hosts multiple events that attract people in various fields like art, design and technology. Worth noting also is the Acacia area which is lively irrespective of the time of day and has both public and private hangouts. Not so far away from it is the Pearl of Africa Hotel which is really lovely. The view is marvellous and so is pretty much everything else about the place. Make sure to catch a live band like the A ka dope band perform too while here. All year round, events in and around the city bring out different people for example the Kampala Fashion Week, Vintage Auto Show, So Far shows to mention but a few.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My brother who got me into music, the New Wave UG that provides a platform to upcoming creatives and last but not least, the friends I’ve made who support and mentor me along the way.
