We had the good fortune of connecting with KateLynn Newberry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KateLynn, how do you think about risk?
I am a huge believer in taking risks. I think you have to be a little bit fearless to be an entrepreneur of any kind. You can’t be afraid to be told no, or have a door close. I would not be as far along in my career if I was afraid to take risks. I’d like to think that I always take calculated risks, but I know that isn’t the case 100% of the time! I’ve never been one to be afraid of “No”, I’ve always told me that’s the worst possible outcome, is if I’m told “No”. I’m not the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay. I always tell myself that “yes” is right around the corner! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, don’t be afraid to be told no. Go take risks. You never know what could happen!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had no ambitions of being an actor when I started my journey in the entertainment industry. My passion was in music. The people I had been working with on music (10+ years ago) pushed me to try acting. I fell in love instantly. I think the biggest obstacle that I’ve had to overcome is that I had no experience in this. I had never done theater, I had not been acting from a young age, I had not gone to collage for this, I had no idea how the industry worked or how to even get started. I started when I was about 25, and I had to hustle to get the experience and training I needed to compete. I’ve trained with a lot of different coaches, they’ve all made a huge impact on my career. I had one coach (JW Myers) tell me to learn the business, this was the best piece of advice for a new person getting involved with the industry. I’ve done a lot of independent work. I’ve been in about 70 different indie films, features and shorts. It’s been a wild ride, and I love it. I’ve worked with so many incredible creatives. I moved to Atlanta from Ohio, right before the pandemic started, because I wanted to try to compete in a bigger market. About a year ago I signed with my new agent, Privilege and I just recently worked on my first television show! Don’t be afraid to try something new! Who knows where it could take you!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My very favorite place in the city is probably Mary’s in East Atlanta village. I take everyone there! It’s got a great vibe. The staff is incredible and I always feel at home and welcome. I love My Sisters Room too, they have a great space for drag shows! For food, I love Rreal Tacos in Mid Town. They have great food there and the staff is always really nice. I also really love Moondogs and Dark Horse for karaoke, and I’m a HUGE fan of karaoke!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel like I have a ton of people to thank. My Mom and Dad. They’re my biggest fans. Every time I feel a little big down or discouraged, they are there to cheer me on. It honestly means the world to me. I have incredible agents at Privilege Talent. They work really hard for me and are just all around great people. I currently study at Drama Inc with Claire Bronson and Scott Poythress. They are amazing. Not only are they a huge inspiration for me, but they are always constantly pushing me and also always cheering me on. I have an incredible support system of friends that are in the industry. I’m thankful for each and every one of them. We are constantly celebrating our accomplishments and wins. It’s nice to be surrounded by positive, likeminded individuals.
