Meet Bee Michelle | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bee Michelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bee, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have been singing since I was four years old in the church and it has always come very natural for me. Music is a way for me to express myself freely. I started writing poetry and plays at the age of 14 all while singing in school and auditioning all over Chicago for various roles. Life started to hit hard for me around age 19, and I got discouraged thinking I wasn’t good enough. So, I chose a different path and I went to cosmetology school. I picked up doing hair early when I got tired of my mother doing my hair. I attended Paul Mitchell The School in Normal, IL and while in school I realized it wasn’t my passion. It was a learned skill, something I did because I didn’t think I was good enough for my real my passion. Honestly, I don’t think I would’ve ever figured it out if I hadn’t suffered a miscarriage. Music saved my life! As a way to heal, I started back writing and singing and now I currently have almost 30 songs that I’ve written.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being an independent artist, who had never recorded before, I am most proud of my first project “Finding Me”. All of the songs on the album are written by me and I even produced on some songs. Each song holds a special place in my heart because I put all of my pain, love, and joy into every word I wrote and it helped me heal. It’s never easy, because I always have to step outside of my comfort zone for my best songs, sometimes having to start over and over for hours until it’s right. I have to go through every emotion that I feel and put that into the words that I sing. I have learned that I can handle anything that comes my way; and that I have everything that I need inside of me to succeed. I want the world to know that I am an imperfect human with flaws who has battled with depression, suicidal thoughts, sexual abuse, miscarriages and disappointments. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will stop me from succeeding and becoming who God wants me to be!! I want to motivate and educate young girls and women; teach them that they’re worthy of everything they want and that they can be the superhero in their own lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I would take them to one of the most fabulous places in the world, downtown Chicago. We would take some beautiful pictures in front of Buckingham Fountain and then take a scroll along the waterfront. Then we would take a boat cruise aboard the Spirit of Chicago and enjoy some food, drinks and dancing while admiring the beautiful downtown scenery. Of course some shopping on the Magnificent Mile and then hit the Wild Hare for some great night reggae dancing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shout out to my mother/manager/stylist/photographer Michelle Knox, Owner of Knox Management. She has been here every step of the way, and I’m not easy to deal with but she is patient with me. I want to thank her for always believing in me, no matter what I chose to do in life. Always uplifting me and never letting me give up on myself, she gives me that extra push i need to keep going.
