We had the good fortune of connecting with Rafael Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rafael, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
For the Latino/Hispanic community, trying to search for services such as doctors, or lawyers etc. that speak Spanish has always been a difficult to find on search engines like Google or Bing. It usually doesn’t tell them out right that they do. Teguio Atlanta is a friendly and simple-to-use app for Latinos to go and find what they need in just the palm of their hand. They can go straight to the category they need, be it restaurant, lawyers, or even retail, and get directions, contact information and even links to the company’s social media. Also it is great for the environment because when these companies want to promote something or even create a coupon, they won’t need to go and make flyers, cards, or paper coupons that will eventually go to the trash. These companies will be able to promote and notify their customers through our app.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I came to the US about four years with nine years of experience with digital marketing back in Mexico. Once I got here, my first job was washing dishing at a restaurant. For me it was a difficult time to get used to this life because back in Mexico I was doing what I wanted and when I got here it was almost like a culture shock. From there I spent from job to job be it construction, gardening, and serving, but I never abandoned the dream of creating my own app. Two years later after coming here, I got the opportunity of being the head of marketing in a Hispanic plaza. Though it was closer to what I wanted, I didn’t have the creative freedom that I was searching for. I never abandoned the idea and intention of creating something that can cover the necessities a person would have. A just like that, the idea of TeGuio Atlanta came to be “La app de los Latinos”. The path to where I have gotten has not been easy, but I have learned from those experiences, be it successes or failures.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first thing I would do is take them is to see a game of the atlanta united (which would probably be a Sunday most likely), and mostly during the week take them to the aquarium, Coca Cola museum, and other things like the sky view and the high museum. Take them to six flags on Wednesday. Stone Mountain on Thursday and Helen on friday. To go out and eat it would just depend on we would like that day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank the people who has supported this project, not only in putting faith and their business in our hands but also wanting to help out the Hispanic/Latino community. I also want to thank you for being there even if some of the moments during this project were tough and especially supporting me in this dream of mine. Thank you very much for being there for me. I love you Yissel.
