We had the good fortune of connecting with Kc Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kc, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risk always sound so scary initial thought. However, once you realize what is possible and how to obtain your goal, nothing is impossible. Life can be so routine sometimes that we become comfortable and stop realizing what could happen if we were just a little more brave in decision making. Risk has played a huge roll in starting my business. Before starting, I worked in elementary and private schools. I’ve always loved Art of all types but painting and crafts were always my favorite. Maybe it was the school teacher in me but colors and textures are always so fun to play with! I one day decided, there has to be more to life than cleaning cute kids noses all day, so with the support of my partner and family, I left my 9 to 5 to start my own creative journey! It hasn’t been easy but till this day one of the best risks I’ve ever taken! Carnation Illustrations just celebrated its 1 year anniversary with over 400 sales, 100 custom designs, and have helped over 20 other small businesses rebrand themselves!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As as artist who sales an array of products it is hard to stick to one style! I love color and patterns. Fun and bright colors, especially hues of pink, always have a spot on my palette. I have been really proud of my jewelry! It has been something I wanted to add for a really long time and I can’t wait to build that aspect so much more! If it’s one thing I’ve learned while starting my own business is that if you don’t have time management, your work and home life will start to blend together. You will burn yourself out and lose the spark of why you started. Taking those days to relax, reflect and take care of your body is so important! Your business will be there, the daily moments you choose to miss, won’t! It’s important that my brand conveys the joys of life. These past few years have been some of the toughest years we as a society have faced. If I could help bring a little happiness to people even if just a moment, that’s all I want. Life is already crazy, it’s important to find “community” when feeling alone, especially these days. I want people to know, I will be that community to anyone who feels that. Carnation Illustrations is always a safe place for anyone!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve been in Atlanta for almost 6 years and I have found some of the coolest spots! If I could take you around town for a few days we would have an amazing brunch at West Egg in West Midtown! They have the best food! For some fun shopping, we love local markets but if we are wanting a little bit of everything we are heading to Old Fourth Ward! I love the vibe of Ponce City Market and honestly, you can’t visit Atlanta without seeing it at least once! Around the corner, they have so many fun spots for Instagram worthy moments, and a local fruit spot LottaFrutta near the market is perfect on a warm day! Inman Park and Krog Street are just across the way to enjoy your afternoon there! More local shops, urban and hip with the coolest crowds. This area is for eaterys, pubs and live entertainment especially on weekends!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This creative journey couldn’t be possible without the help and support of my partner, Lance and my family. To the art community I’ve met, you guys are the best support system! To the Hispanic community, this is for you! We work for what we want, we know nothing is given to us. This is for all the little girls with a dream, you can do whatever you put your mind to! Dream big mija!
