We had the good fortune of connecting with Miranda Dohrman Morley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miranda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have loved baking for as long as I can remember. I learned to bake my great-grandmother’s pound cake when I was 7 years old. I also love to travel, so when I visit new places, I try to visit as many bakeries as I can. During the pandemic, my career as a classically-trained musician came to a standstill, so I turned to baking as a stress-reliever. I kept hearing the phrase ‘everything is upside-down’, so I thought it would be fun to make some upside-down cakes! I started tinkering with sizes and flavor combinations, and eventually developed the first-ever Tumble Cakes – mini upside-down cakes in unexpected flavors! I sold them to friends and family, and then word started to spread, so I started Skybird Bakery. This business helped to get my family through the pandemic. I am so grateful for the support, and looking forward to getting Tumble Cakes out to the masses!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a freelance musician, I have spent many years learning how to run my own business – including managing budgets, building a website and online presence, and networking with other musicians. The pandemic slowed everything down, but I was able to transfer those skills to starting Skybird Bakery. There are so many amazing bakeries in Atlanta, so I knew I wanted to do something a bit different. That’s where the Tumble Cakes came in. The individual size cakes were a hit with dinner parties, socially distant events, and gifts! I even have customers who order a stash just to keep on hand when they need a little treat. It has definitely been a learning process, but I feel like I am finding my niche!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With a toddler at home, I generally opt for outdoor activities, but I always love the energy of Ponce City Market. Piedmont Park is another great destination for walks and people watching, and I love the new Westside Park! The patio at Forza Storico is another favorite, as well as Empire State South and their new tasting menu!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The folks at Leven Kitchen are the best! Lauren Carey and Fernando Contreras helped me set up my bakery and get started in a commercial kitchen – something I had ZERO experience in doing! Plus, I couldn’t have even started all this baking without Phillip, my amazing husband and Chief Taste Tester.
