We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Samuel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Being able to express, and showcase my abilities are the main reasons that drive my creative pursuit. I just have this mindset to create, because of that I’m consistently starting new projects. Sharpening my sewing skills with new ideas has helped me break outside of my comfort zone. By doing so, I am able to bring so many of my visions to life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe that a bit of me goes into every piece I create. Although, I’m particularly known as the “head wrap lady”, I’m often asked to sew pieces other than wraps. Having an open mind allows me to grow my business outside of what it started from. Head wraps were the beginning of HelenAnn, but I’m pleased that I’ve had the chance to fulfill other requests. Learning new skills can come with different challenges, but being able to overcome those challenges is exciting for me. The vision started with hair accessories, and has evolved into baby cloths, curtains, tutus, and more. Being open to creating new, and different designs is fundamental when it comes to HelenAnn. It’s not about being complacent, with growth comes new opportunities. I’m always eager to be inspired, and looking for new ways to expand my brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m such a chill person, doing simple things is an adventure to me. I would definitely suggest spending sometime in Washington, DC. Visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture is a must. Touring the whole museum, and really taking in all that it has to offer would take at least an entire weekend. Another eye opening experience would be the Egypt on the Potomac field trip. With so much history within the city, the tour points out so much of what is hidden in plain sight. I would also recommend catching a Step Afrika show. The performances are amazing, and never disappoint.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my cousin, Jamil. I always admired his unapologetic spirit. Jamil had charisma that could never be matched, and a heart of gold. I will forever be grateful for the bond we had, as well as the many memories we shared. I can only hope that, with his guidance from above, I am able create something that will keep his name alive forever. He continues to be a true inspiration to me, and will live eternally in my heart.
