We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Casey, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Many people think that all financial advisors are the same. The reality is, most financial advisors are selling products (annuities, mutual funds, or insurance) which creates a conflict of interest between the advisor and the client. I believe that products should never pay the advisor, only the client, which allows the advisor to give the best advice. Unfortunately, only 2% of financial advisory firms operate in this capacity. These firms are set up as fiduciaries, meaning they have to work in the best interest of the client and operate as fee-only, which simply means that products are not paying the advisor.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wiser Wealth Management is a financial planning and portfolio management company that works in the best interest of our clients. We know that many people are afraid of making the wrong financial decisions and are unsure who to trust to solve their financial problems. We believe that everyone should have a trusted financial advisor working in their best interest, so we have created a conflict-free financial planning and portfolio management process designed to provide our clients a path to financial success.

Working in the best interest of the client seems pretty straight forward, but the industry was not setup for this when I launched my firm in 2001. Today, it is much easier because custodians like TD Ameritrade have endorsed my business model. Technology has advanced to be able to easily manage low cost portfolios and financial planning software has been developed to plan more efficiently. Today we are one of the fastest growing advisory firms in the country. I am learning very fast about how to scale and build while maintaining quality and a small firm feel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I enjoy spending time outside the city in Marietta Square. Some of my favorite places to eat are Mac’s Chophouse, Marietta Square Market, and Taqueria Tsunami. I love going to Braves games and hanging out at the battery. I also enjoy playing golf at Marietta Country Club.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My grandfather Reverend Charles Sims exemplified Christlike love. His encouragement, loyalty and the way he lived his life helped give me confidence to stand out, speak up and motivate those around me.

A business book that really helped kickstart growth was Donald Miller’s book “Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen”.
