Meet Monica Coates | Licensed manicurist & Salon Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Monica Coates and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think a lot of people don’t know the time, skill set and money that it takes to be a nail artist. Most of us put A LOT of time in from practicing, to additional training to shopping for quality supplies. Training, quality supplies and aesthetics also cost and our products aren’t cheap. Lastly your skill set has to always improve to keep up with the trends always changing .

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I truly believe what sets me apart as a nail artist and creative is I set my own bar to exceed and I’m always looking for the opportunity to be different. I also enjoy helping others and I enjoy that.

I got here by faith. I had no clue what I was doing ! I went from a local government accountant to nail school. I had always wanted to “do nails” but I definitely didn’t think I would quit my job. It was hard. I had so many other life events going down that failing in the nail industry wasn’t an option. No matter if it was the $150 weeks or no bookings at all. With each speed bumps I would work harder as if it literally lit a fire in me. Hard work and tears is what helped me overcome.
I’ve learned that yes you can stop but what if you keep going! That’s the reward.

and to share my passion for the black woman in the nail industry. I’m still in the middle of my story so I hope to share it again in 2-5 years .

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m the friend that loves to cook and entertain. So having a small party is how I normally start things off food and laughter . I’d definitely have to take them to Taco Mama for the taco lovers . At some point we’d have to hit up Casonova Lounge it’s a nice upscale bar and lounge.
The Royal Corner is also a stop . This place has everything natural wellness for like a day out for self care.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ok so a group of people play a major part into the support, love and and drive I received . My children help to keep me focused , my mother won’t allow me to give up on anything , and my oldest brother ,LJ, instilled hustle in me.
