Meet Bremeka Gilbert | Chandler & Social Worker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bremeka Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bremeka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I believe that God lead to candle making and starting a business doing so. I’m a licensed Social Worker specializing in Mental Health and during the pandemic, I was employed as a counselor, I had just had a baby (born premature), so many people that I knew personally had lost their lives due to Covid-19, and I was overwhelmed. I decided to resign from my job. One day while taking a shower, I was talking to God and praying. I remember saying “God, the helper needs some help.” I heard God respond “make some candles”. I was confused to say the least. I have never been a crafter or a DIY person. I didn’t know the 1st thing about making candles. I began to research… for months I researched. I began to buy supplies and test. From there, BlesScents Candle Company was born.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create hand poured wickLESS candles (that’s right they have no wick), wax melts, room/linen mists, carpet refreshers, and all things smell good. I opted to make wickLESS candles as a safer flameless alternative to wicked candles because I have a baby and I didn’t want a flame from a candle in the house. I think what sets me a part from other candle makers is I didn’t start making candles because I wanted to or to “be in business”, it is therapeutic for me. I believe that comes across in my products. I’m fairly new to entrepreneurship and candle making to be honest, but I think I am where I am because I care about people and desire for my products to make them feel better… put them in a better mood. I’ve had so many customers reach out to me and say “when I got my order, I smelled it through the packaging. It was like I opened a gift to myself…. it makes me excited and thankful that God entrusted BlesScents Candle Company to me.
I would want the world to know that BlesScents Candle is more than candles, it’s a Blessing in the scents!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This one is difficult for a few reasons, one is I live in a small town and two is I’m a home body. But if I wanted to show my best friend a great time, we’d definitely go to Navi Wine Bar and Tasting Room and Twist Skillit Food Truck in Columbus, Ga. I would take my bestie to visit Ma Rainey House also in Columbus, Ga. We’re eating brunch at GardenParc in Atlanta. We’ll also hit a few museums especially the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Al.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
1st and foremost. God for the vision and provisions. Next, I want to recognize my husband. He is my biggest supporter and is always there to do whatever I need him to whether it is funding or making. He’s there and it means so much to me.
