We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Hinds and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I kinda just did it lol. I never wanted to start my own business but it kind of just happened. I was waiting through a long interview process for a job in my field and I thought to myself, “Why wait when I can just make it happen myself?”

I would never be able to give the experiences I give my clients now, working for someone else. I also wanted to change how people saw service providers in Philly.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a licensed esthetician, which means I specialize in facial and body treatments specifically for black and women of color. I also educate my clients with best practices and products on how to treat their skin.

I’ve always been interested in beauty, but skincare and body care have always piqued my interests. I learned practical topics in school but I’ve also learned plenty from research, my peers and actively working in the field.

I I feel the most confident when my skin is healthy and glowing. I love helping others achieve their skincare or body care goals. I wanted to provide my clients with an experience that would make them feel warm, safe and educated enough to take care of themselves at home.

One of the most challenging things I experienced was always talking myself out of doing my own thing (starting my business). Ever since I got my license, I sought out work with or under other black owned estheticians and it never worked out. I didn’t want the stress or the responsibility of being the boss, so I let someone else be it. That never worked out . Having my own thing allows me to do things the way that I want and allows me to service my clientele the way that I want to. All the things I thought I was bad at or things I used as an excuse before. turned out to be some of my greatest strengths!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I honestly look to my fellow black estheticians that I’ve connected with on social media, especially Twitter.

I’ve learned so much from them! They offer support, fellowship and so much more.

Also a shoutout my partner and best friends for always listening to my crazy ideas.
