We had the good fortune of connecting with Zulekha Pitts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zulekha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m someone who believes in living life to the fullest, with no room for regrets. I never want to look back and wonder ‘What if?’ To achieve anything, you have to take that first step, even when the outcome is uncertain. For me, taking risks is about stepping out on faith and trusting the process. No matter what happens, I can always say I gave it my all. This mindset has allowed me to accomplish incredible things in both my life and career. Every risk I’ve taken has added richness to my journey, and I believe the best is still ahead.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Journalism is my foundation — my bread and butter. I started from humble beginnings as a blogger for G-Unit Records and grew into writing for major media giants like USA Today Network and CBS News. My broadcasting journey even landed me an on-camera role at the Gem Shopping Network, and now, I’m proud to be a journalist for the Miami New Times. While my 9-5 is in journalism and content creation, my passion also lies in the performing arts. That passion has taken me to incredible heights, from singing at Carnegie Hall at just 9 years old to becoming an Equity Membership Candidate for Broadway as an adult.
I’ve had the privilege of sharing movie sets with talents like Don Cheadle, Meagan Good, and Method Man. I’ve even graced billboards for haircare lines like Design Essentials. A lot of these opportunities came from taking leaps of faith, and trusting my abilities even when I didn’t know what was ahead.
I’ve learned that I’m someone who can do it all. Being multi-talented has allowed me to find my way in many different spaces, and I embrace every chance to use my skills to advance my career. With just one class left before I earn my master’s degree, I’m also gearing up to step into entrepreneurship. My story is all about versatility, determination, and never being afraid to take the next big step.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When friends come to visit, I love giving them a mix of Miami’s artistic vibes and upscale energy. We’d start in Wynwood, where the art scene is vibrant, with stunning murals around every corner. The vibe there is laid-back and welcoming, and the diversity of people adds to its charm. My go-to spot for live music in Wynwood is Gramps — it’s got a cool, casual atmosphere that never disappoints.
For a more elevated experience, I take them to Brickell. The rooftop bars, like Sugar, offer breathtaking skyline views that really show off Miami’s glitzy side. We’d grab dinner at Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, a favorite for its stylish setting and great food. To top it all off, we’d end the night at Blackbird, where the energy is electric, and you can dance until you drop. It’s the perfect mix of art, culture, and nightlife that showcases the best of Miami.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It truly took a village to shape me into who I am today, and at the heart of that village were my mom and grandma — the queens who led by example. I owe them everything. My dad was in and out of my life, but his intellect and charisma are traits that I’ve definitely inherited. I also have to give credit to the naysayers and haters along the way — it’s been incredibly satisfying proving them wrong and showing what I’m capable of.
