We had the good fortune of connecting with Zola Mandisa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zola, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important impact for me as a parent is to teach my kids consistency, perseverance and goal setting. The three tasks I juggle as a parent are being a business owner, pursuing my nursing degree, and raising children is not easy. Trying to have a personal life seems like I’m being pulled in so many different directions all at once. My daily mantra that keeps me level headed is “Never Give Up Preserve.” As a mother of three I have always instilled values in my kids using the nine rules of parenting from an article I read……
1. Boost your child’s self-esteem
2. Catch kids being good
3. Set limits and be consistent with it
4. Make time for your kids
5. Be a good role model
6. Make communication a priority
7. Be flexible and willing to adjust parenting style
8. Show that your love is unconditional
9. Know your own needs and limitations as a parent
These nine step’s I follow daily ensure that I am a positive role model for them.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the brilliant owner of Zola Z Canvas Creations, where our motto is “It’s not just about the haircuts it’s about the Experience.” Our shop creates an old school appeal in a serene atmosphere, where you are bound to take a nap or relax after a hard day’s work. Our services include hair care, beard treatments, restoration services, haircuts, facials and massages.
I have accomplished so much over the past 5 years in the haircare industry, ambitious, and persevere in all aspects of life. Being a mother of 3 beautiful children is a task in itself. Running a business, nursing school, and in-between personal life my hands are always full. Whether it be a volunteer event at the kids’ school, a project for nursing school, or a pair of clippers in my hand, I overcome these obstacles daily with my mantra “Perseverance.” I chant in the mirror every morning once my feet hit my hardwood floors.
Lessons I learn along the way are “shit happens, fix it and move forward.” I was born to be an artist. When I’m in my element everything flows. Zola Z stands by Canvas Creations slogan: “It wouldn’t feel like Artwork if the Canvas didn’t Capture the Eye.”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In my spare time I like to hike, travel, dance, sing, or just chill at home with a glass of wine. If I had a weeklong trip I for sure would be out of the country in Ecuador, where I would be swinging from the Swing of Death at the end of the world, or in Amsterdam dancing until my feet hurt at Club Canvas in the hot tubs on the rooftop with a glass of wine. As far as itinerary, what is that even? LOL. What’s the point of a vacation and you still have to be on a daily schedule? So my itinerary or motto for seven days on vacation is
1. Enjoy your vacation
2. Go to sleep and wake up as late as you would like
3. Ignore the clock
4. Smile everyday!!!
Usually when I party in Atlanta, I am on Miami Circle known for their popular bowling alley. The Painted Pin where you also have games, ping-pong and Skee-Ball. My next party spot would be The Red Phone Booth, known for their craft cocktails and the mysterious entrance. You enter by securing a phone number which is used to dial into the club inside a red phone booth from a restored antique phone booth from London.
