We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoe Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zoe, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Persistence. My father always said, no one in the world cares more about you than you. You have to push and fight for yourself all the time. I’ve never thought “Oh, I’ve pushed to hard for the last three opportunities, I deserve to be given the next opportunity.” That’s, unfortunately, not how having a successful career works. Persistence is a vital quality.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When you think of a screenwriter, you might see a tortured soul spending their days hold up in a small dark room with nothing to keep them company except a cold cup of coffee. While this is very much true for some, it doesn’t define me as a writer. For me, screenwriting is about experiencing life. You can’t explore and open up the human condition on the page if you don’t interact with people in the real world. I’ve had many careers before I became a writer and I’ve used all of them to influence not only who I am as a person but who I am as a writer. Now, what makes writing so difficult is being good at it. The craft is so intricate and a challenge to master, if mastering is even possible. That’s why I like it so much, the limit of skill required is endless. The lessons are endless. One such lesson being, your time on this earth is so short and you have to find the people and moments in life that make it worth living. Writing allows me to explore the rights, wrongs, and in-between of this lesson.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Living in Los Angeles gives you so many opportunities for a variety of activities. I’d take a friend hiking in Griffith Park. You can get some of the best views of the city as well as the Hollywood sign. Then I’d take them to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Bike rides along the beach are always fun. In terms of food, there are so many options. I’m vegetarian so the restaurants I like cater to vegans and vegetarians. Two of my top restaurants are Pura Vita and Tu Madre, both in West Hollywood. Italian and Mexican, delicious. If they just want to relax, there are many great parks in the Burbank area. LA is full of activities, so whatever you wanna do, they’ve got it here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my parents constant love and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. So, I’d like to thank them for everything they’ve done for me.
