We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvonne Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yvonne, how do you think about risk?
The biggest risk I ever took was believing in God and betting on myself. In 2019, I was working at an African braiding salon in which I was an independent contractor servicing their clientelle. I remember working 6 days a week and barely being able to afford to live comfortably. I couldn’t understand how I was breaking my back, showing up for work everyday and still sleeping on my grandmother’s couch. I was tired of struggling, but I didn’t have a solution for the problem. A few weeks later, the owner and I got into a dispute. Instead of apologizing and giving me what was owed, she decided to berate me. Her conclusion was that she would allow me to continue to work, but not give me what was owed. In this conversation, I had a light bulb moment. Instead of firing me, she still wanted to keep me on the staff. In this moment, I truly understood how valuable I was. That conversation revealed to me that despite the conflict I was an asset and an excellent braider! That was the ultimate confidence booster I needed to step out on faith. I ended up finishing my shift that day and firing myself at the end of the night. I reported the news to my grandmother, and she wasn’t stoked that I fired myself. She told me that I would need to find somewhere else to live because I didn’t have employment. I called my friend and she allowed me to live in her basement while I got on my feet. During my transition, I was still braiding at a few braiding salons. but I was still struggling to provide for myself. In March of 2020, my car was repossesed and I had no means of traveling to the salons to braid. I had hit rock bottom and found myself crying for 24 hours straight. I decided to pray to God and ask Him what am I supposed to do. He replied, “You have everything you need to be successful”. I wiped my face and realized I still had my hands, braiding materials, my phone, and social media. I figured since I couldn’t drive, I would get clients to come to me. I introduced myself to the braiding market by discounting my price by 50%. I knew that my talent would speak for itself. In about 2 months my clientele grew like wild fire. In such a short amount of time, I was able to afford my own salon suite and my clientele continues to grow exponentially today. I’m grateful for this experience because now I truly get to embody that great things come from outside of your comfort zone. Do not be afraid of living outside of your comfort zone, but indulge in it! God will always see you through! Sparkle Brand Braids and Sparkle Brand Studios would not be here without taking the risk!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love listening to music and dancing. My favorite genres of music right now are early 2000’s, afrobeat, amapiano, and soca.I am very adamant about only going to functions where I will dance and sweat. If those two things are not happening, count me out! My favorite places to frequent have been anything thrown by or affiliated by TheJumpOff, Rum Punch Brunch, and Bamba Tuesday’s at Rock Steady! Bring your dance moves because I’m trying to battle on the dance floor!
