We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvette Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yvette, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
as an illustrator, I really like to go for a walk and take pictures with my phone to record details from life. most of the elements from the illustration come from daily life. You never know which pictures you take before are going to have a big use in the future. For me, I usually can find inspiration in my photos.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my attempts to combine illustration and Chinese painting, I have been exploring a more optimal approach. I want to extract an element or a way that can both reflect the traditional culture and become a symbol of my own illustration If I use too many elements, the audience’s attention will be distracted
After experimenting with various ways of drawing, I chose to use lines to build all the structure of the illustration. Line is the main expression of Chinese brush painting. The twist of a line can express a skeletal structure, the boundary of a silhouette, or even a flat surface. The details of the line give more possibilities to my illustrations

I am proud that I can use traditional Chinese culture in my paintings in conjunction with my personal experiences growing up. Combining line and color will enrich the visual experience of the picture. The thickness and sparseness of the lines can dominate the viewer’s first sight. The warmth and coolness of the color can express the emotion I want to express in the illustration.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I will bring my friend to the vintage shop and art museum. My bestie and I really enjoy the moment to visit the vintage shops. I am fascinated by all things that are full of age. Every object has its own story. Also the High Museum of Art is a perfect place to visit. This museum has a collection of works by a number of artists from the southern United States.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to say thank you to my family first. I was born in a family of painters. My grandparents and father are both traditional Chinese painters. When I was young, I did not think I would pursue a career related to painting, but I was influenced by traditional painting methods and techniques. Since high school, I have started to study traditional Chinese painting techniques. I was thinking about the traditional Chinese culture that also can be combined with western culture. It’s going to be more interesting. So after high school, I came to America to study illustration. In my college, I studied how to use digital media. I started to put the line work from traditional Chinese painting into my illustration works.
