We had the good fortune of connecting with Yolanda Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yolanda, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a Junior in high school I worked in my cousins salon as what we use to call a Shampoo Girl. Later named Shampoo Assistant. I had plans to attend a four year college but that changed. I fell in love with being in the salon. I loved meeting and talking to different types of women and hearing their stories. I was often amazed at the various hair and makeup transformations that I saw on a daily basis. I fell in love with beauty! All things beauty. Hair, makeup and fashion. I quickly realized my natural ability to style hair. I thought to myself, I can make my own schedule and make as much money as I wanted. Sign me up! I decided to attend Cosmetology school after I graduated and went back to that salon where I worked for 20 years.

I decided to leave there in 2016 to go into my own personal space. It was difficult but needed for growth. Since then I have worked with countless professional women educating them on all things beauty. I worked on a movie project, started my own line of lipstick and lipglosses and taught makeup classes on my Fab in 15 makeup technique.

There are no limits in this industry. I can’t think of anything else I would rather do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a hair stylist and makeup artist. My clientele mainly consists of professional women who want to show up at work and life looking their absolute best. I often boast about getting my clients in and out of the salon. Time is precious and I don’t want to waste anyone’s. If my client has an event I love that fact that I can slay their hair then grab my makeup bag and beat their face! I often say that’s my superpower.

I’m excited about my line of cosmetics. I use to work for a direct sales company and the bulk of my sales were lipsticks and lipglosses. That prompted me to want to start my own line.

I have taken countless hair, makeup and business classes. I have traveled to sit in on business masterminds. One of them being Stedman Graham.

I can’t say that I had a lot of challenges in my career. I had support from my family. The most important thing to me was maintaining a healthy work/home balance. I have two children 23 and 21. I wanted to be able to participate in their activities and actually see them grow up.

I’ve learned that in every situation there is a lesson. Be it good or difficult. I’ve also learned that God has put inside of us everything we need. We just have to push fear aside and go for it. Once we start moving the people we need will fall in place and assist us with what we need.

I am dedicated to helping women expose their inner beauty by uplifting and encouraging them. It’s amazing what a haircut, new color or a red lipstick will do for a woman’s self esteem.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would book a room at the beach.
Monday: A day of Beauté. Hair, mani pedi and nails. Also a massage

Tuesday: Light morning workout. Maybe a walk at the oceanfront. Breakfast and shopping. Dinner would be at a Asian Cuisine Rooftop.

Wednesday: The theme would be wine down Wednesday. We would go to my favorite wine bar Branches Tasting Room.

Thursday: Live music at Brothers Restaurant downtown

Friday: Protect your neck would be Fridays theme. We would go to the shooting range and practice our shot. Dinner would be at a nice cigar lounge.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this to my cousin Karen. I worked beside her for 20 years in her salon. She taught me so much about life and being a business owner.
