We had the good fortune of connecting with Ylaysia Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ylaysia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
To me, authenticity and purity are key factors to my idea of success. One of the biggest things I admire in other people and myself is the ability to be yourself unapologetically (no matter how loud or quiet) in a world that tries so hard to be uniform. I think when you refuse to create a false persona or mask, people have no choice but to relate to you because we’re all human. I love to think that when people are seeing my content or hearing of me word-to-mouth, it will always match up to what you’re seeing when I’m right in front of you.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over anything else, I consider myself an artist. A major thing that sets me apart is my dedication to originality and organic production. Over the past couple of years, I have been on a journey of learning how to do every aspect of music on my own terms. I have been self. teaching myself production while working on my first EP, “Sweetheart Hotline”. Although it is a challenge to attempt to learn skills on your own, the past year of quarantine really gave me the opportunity to sit down and focus on building my strengths. One thing I’ve learned with making music and other creative projects is that you have to be okay with change. Some of the things I’ve created over the years, that never even reached anyone’s ears or eye’s besides my own, are products that I would NEVER create or release now; I think it just reminds us how we’re constantly evolving and we have to grow with our everchanging sound/look/image/brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay so here’s the itinerary (we’re gonna act like everything is fully open): For breakfast, I’m taking you to Mary Mac’s Tea Room on Ponce then we’re gonna go over to the Botanical Gardens to see the newest floral exhibit. Luckily, Piedmont Park is attached so we’ll walk on over and stroll the park. For lunch, we’re gonna go over to East Atlanta to Holy Taco (please try their chimichangas). As it gets dark, we’re gonna go to Starlight Drive-in theatre and to top it all off, we’ll end our night at Revery VR Bar. What a day 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to Keiarra McLean. Ever since I’ve met her a few years ago, there has only been love and support between two boss black women in Atlanta! In the past year, she gave me the opportunity to do a cover feature for her magazine Flurry Lifestyle which gave me the chance to share projects and my current mindstate and now I am working with Keiarra and a team to provide poems and writing content for the magazine editions. We have to take a moment to appreciate the people that see your light and only pour more into your cup! I’d also love to shoutout my mother because her existence alone is enough motivation for me to be great.
