We had the good fortune of connecting with Yitzhak Yonaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yitzhak, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
How many jobs can you do at a public park, in the sun? Probably like many people, I grew up interpreting my life experience through the lense of imagined characters. If my brother, sister and I were not developing ornate ballads with action figures and dolls, we were constantly employing our imaginative capacities in some other endeavor, mock performances, sports, science experiments, museum trips. Seemed like a fine thing to do at the time, so why not try to do it in adulthood? Practicing the arts is a never-ending journey of exploration, meditation and self-discovery. To be able to apply that pursuit to the enrichment of my community the ultimate win-win.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wow, so the last interview I did with ya’ll was back in 2018 when Incubator Comics had just put out New Ape Idea. Just a couple years have transpired since; we were mostly underclassmen at SCAD and pretty fresh to the professional arts world, eager to showcase our talents. (I still am fresh.) Incubator Comics put out a decent amount of work, we made it to HeroesCon, and learned a lot about how professional artists go about making a living with their creativity. Made some great friends. Ultimately, those of us who came together decided it was best to follow our solo paths, and we closed Incubator Comics last summer. Very grateful for the lessons learned in those adventures. If there’s any advice I have based on those lessons for an uncertain artist, it’s make like Nike and Just Market It. You learn what you’re doing well and what you can improve on by taking your products and services to market and getting that FEEDBACK. You also get to meet great people along the way. This November, I will graduate from SCAD, and jump back into the professional world with considerably more ability than when I first came to Atlanta. One of the newest additions to my life has been working with close friends as accountabilibuddies to keep me moving forwards with cartooning. I recently created a new home for subscription content and freelance services through the Yitzhak Yonaton brand. I post a new page every of content every Friday and will be launching my first Webtoon series, The Tourist, summer of 2021. You can get a sneak peak of his adventures at thetouristcartoon.tumblr.com and on instagram @thetouristcartoon.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Covid-19 Atlanta? There’s only one place to go, and it’s the best place. Kennessaw Mountain. There you can, run, hike, convene with nature, channel the spirits of fallen soldiers, and eat wild grapes. Pretty adventurous right? I’d also probably take you to Coan Park and Honeysuckle Park. Baseball fields, picnic benches, workout equipment all good too. Foodwise, The General Muir. Their pastrami melts in your mouth like milk-chocolate. The tacos and bubble teas along Buford Highway. Cheap and delicious!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Two major shoutouts to my cartoonist mentors, Don Simpson and Kevin Burkhalter. Not the cartoonist I am today without their guidance and encouragement.
