Meet Xuan Huang | FX Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Xuan Huang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xuan, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’m a VFX artist specializing in films, TV series, commercials, and other media. While some of my projects, such as commercials and certain TV series, often demand shorter production timelines and overtime, film projects follow a more extended schedule with higher demands. In the current fast-paced landscape, the importance of work-life balance cannot be overstated. As technology continues to blur the lines between work and personal life, maintaining this equilibrium becomes pivotal in averting burnout, boosting overall well-being, and ensuring sustained productivity.
Back when I was working at this small studio hooked up with a local TV station, they paid me project by project. The sweet deal was that these projects usually came with fatter paychecks. But, on the flip side, I was practically chained to my desk, doing like 12-hour marathons every single day. At first, I was cool with it – I mean, I was raking in more money than a regular gig, plus getting tons of hands-on experience. But, fast forward three years, and my health started giving me side-eye. I had to put the brakes on, take a breather, and seriously think about what the heck work-life balance even meant.
During that period, I began to sense that things couldn’t stay the same forever. It just felt like the right time to switch things up. With some money set aside, I started realizing that my current gig was kind of hitting a dead end. So, I decided to take the plunge and leave my job, figuring it was a good opportunity to try something new.
After finishing school, I landed a spot at the studio where I am now. The cool part? I’m not stuck in a never-ending work cycle anymore. Most of the time, I’m cruising through the regular 9-to-5 hours, and honestly, it’s been a pretty refreshing change.
Nowadays, I genuinely feel like I’m living life again. I’ve got the freedom to roam around the city, hang out with my furry companions, and, perhaps most crucially, just kick back and unwind. Being an artist, I’ve realized that my life experiences serve as my wellspring of inspiration. Without that work-life equilibrium, I’m convinced my creative journey would hit a dead end sooner than later.
For me, work-life balance boils down to what you really want. It’s something worth reconsidering every now and then. I’ve been through the slog of those never-ending 12-hour days. Sure, they weren’t a walk in the park, but they’ve paved the way for the chilled-out work-life balance I have now. However, I firmly believe that working relentlessly without a clear purpose isn’t a wise approach. It’s all about finding a meaningful balance between putting in the effort and reaping the rewards.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work as an FX Artist, focusing on crafting visual effects like water, fire, and such. I’m also into designing 3D environments and motion media to make a lasting impact. Over time, I’ve had the chance to contribute to various projects, from student films to TV shows and dramas. One recent gig was for Netflix’s show ‘Diploma.’
What really gets me going is problem-solving in my work. I like tackling challenges creatively, kind of like solving a puzzle that ends up looking awesome. And I enjoy working on personal projects too, like ‘Yukaku,’ where I built an Unreal Engine scene with houses, plants, and rain effects.
One thing that stands out is my ability to pick up new software quickly and make it work for the project. I’m always up for new challenges, and my passion for cool visuals keeps me motivated to deliver quality work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I think about my favorite spot in the city, it’s got to be the “World of Coca-Cola.” This place holds a special charm for me, and it’s not just about the drinks.
For starters, the history behind Coca-Cola is like a captivating story that spans generations. Learning about how the brand evolved, seeing vintage advertisements, and exploring the cultural impact – it’s like stepping into a time capsule of pop culture.
What makes it even more intriguing is the collection of Coca-Cola products from around the world. Some are hits, some are misses, but the diversity is a delight. It’s like a global tasting adventure without leaving the city.
So, why is it my favorite? Well, it’s a mix of history, culture, and curiosity, all bottled up in one spot. It’s a reminder that a simple drink can be a window into stories from around the world.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Shoutout series is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of those who’ve been integral to our journey. Reflecting on my own path, I’m grateful for the chance to express my appreciation.
