We had the good fortune of connecting with Xin Lu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Xin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start an IG account during the pandemic to stay connected to other people and as a way to share DIY projects. I enjoy doing projects around my house and my husband encouraged me to share them publicly. Though I was very reluctant at first (I’m a shy introvert), I’m glad he pushed me out of my comfort zone. My goal for my account is to inspired people to make their homes a place they love even if they don’t have a big budget. I never thought about becoming an influencer. It came as a byproduct of my account.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is sharing projects I do around the house with my audience. These are mostly DIY home projects but also smaller craft projects and some gardening and houseplants. I’m most proud of doing the One Room Challenge twice last year. Once in the spring where I redid my guest room and once in the fall where I redid my master bedroom. I learned so many new skills each round including painting a wallpaper, making two night stands, adding a plant wall, installing box panels, reupholstering a couch, making new pillows, and more. One thing I’ve learned is that if you ask for help, most of the time, it will come. People are very generous with their knowledge and are very willing to help you along the way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I wish I explored the city more but most of my recommendations are restaurants. I love Sweet Hut for boba, I Love Pho for pho, Bahn Mi Cafe for the best bahn mi, Oriental Pearl Seafood Restaurant for dim sum, Taste of China for Peking duck.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my husband, Kam, for pushing me to pursue my passion and share my work with people outside of our family.
