We had the good fortune of connecting with Williemae “Mae” Dixon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Williemae “Mae”, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I am the mother of two sons, four years of age apart who are now seasoned adults.. For a short period of their life I was a single parent. I struggled to care for them, but I taught them to be integral, hardworking, compassionate and independent.. My children today are great parents raising children that came with relationships and/or marriage. They are both business owners, and one founded an organization to assist fathers in securing some level of custody of their children. The other son founded an organization to empower male youth.

In 2021 I had a near-death experience, my sons came to my beside, one who had moved to Mexico but then moved back to Florida to care for me along with his brother who lived in Georgia. Eventually I was moved to Georgia for better care. My younger son has been my caretaker until this day. Together they collaborate to insure my well-being.

I think the most important thing I did for my children was to give them a solid foundation that was built on the principles of God.

What should our readers know about your business?
am the former owner and first African American owner of a real estate brokerage and Bookkeeping firm in my city. As a result of my community and professional involvement I was named President of our Realtors Association of over 1100 members. The first and only African American to date to hold that honor and the same for our local Womens Council of Realtors. I served as president for numerous community boards, I co-founded and presided for 10 years over an organization that brought together the citizens and law enforcement of our city to reduce the killings and crime in our communities. I received the Points of Light Award during President Obama’s term for our work with A Will & Way, Inc., the nonprofit I founded. I received numerous awards both professionally and civically. I served as a Florida Supreme Court County Mediator.  All of this prepared me to provide individuals with tools for survival emotionally, physically, spiritually and entrepreneurially. My business is Mae Dixon, LLC, I am an author, I have written and facilitate group leadership and empowerment programs/sessions for women and teens in addition to individual coaching.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of the eateries we’d have to visit are The Juicy Crab, Yami Crab, JJ’s Seafood, This is it!, Olive Garden and Golden Crust Caribbean

Places to visit, Illuminarium, CNN, Stone Mountain, Atlanta Black History, Civil Rights City Driving Tour and The Black Wallstreet.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The organization I founded was very impactful to our community thanks to the board members and volunteers who assisted me in empowering the lives of women and children survivors of domestic violence. There is one person in particular who has been by my side for more than 23 years, she encouraged me to follow my dream and start the organization, she worked right beside me and invested financially in my vision. Her name is Georgena Sanchez.
