We had the good fortune of connecting with William George and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
At a young age, I dove into the discography of legendary Electronic Dance Music artists such as Skrillex, Zeds Dead, Bassnectar, Deadmau5 and more. I would watch YouTube videos of live concerts hosted by these artists almost religiously, wishing I was old enough to attend these crazy events. Once I got to high school, I started experimenting with social media platforms, trying to find the right niche that would make me go viral. In my mind, I thought I could grow these social media accounts and maybe sell them for an easy profit. Little did I know, one of these accounts would take off and become very useful for my concert obsession. The creation of WubVidz started off as an outlet for me to post videos that I recorded at concerts. My tweets quickly began to skyrocket after artists like Excision, Zedd, and Marshmello would repost my videos. At the age of 17, a music festival in Canada actually reached out to me and asked for me to promote their festival. This is when I knew something was there. After promoting the festival, I began networking with Atlanta concert venues and music festivals, trying to find more local avenues. Fastforward four years later, I have promoted and attended music festivals such as Imagine, EDC Orlando, Goldrush and more as part of the media team. I also recently started interviewing artists in the Electronic Dance Music scene and my first guest was Darude, the mastermind behind the famous track, Sandstorm. I turned my simple hobby and music interest into a business, and I love what I do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would consider much of my business, art, in the sense that I’m professionally recording videos and photos at these concerts and events, and actively transforming my social media pages into a fun, creative blog for electronic music audiences. Transforming this platform into a business hasn’t been as easy as some would think and its still an ongoing process. During this journey, I’ve learned to not force things, to simply enjoy the music when times become challenging, and that you can’t please everybody. I want the world to see my brand as an inspiration, to see that you can benefit from developing unique hobbies and interests.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I spend a lot of my time in the Midtown area while attending school at Georgia Tech. I love this town and the fact that you can practically walk to anywhere you need to go. I enjoy going to Park Tavern for drinks with friends and Piedmont Park when the weather is nice. If you’re looking for a great concert experience in Atlanta, I recommend attending Iris and DEF events. They have the best sound systems and production by far. My favorite restaurant for a burger would have to be The Vortex. Also, definitely order the ribs at Houston’s and tell them Will sent you.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to first give a shoutout to my father, Chris George, for inspiring me with his amazing music tastes and sharing his love for concerts. Shoutout to my mother, Krystin George, for always supporting me in all my endeavors and cheering me on along the way. Shoutout to my brother and sister, Nick George and Brittney Huckaby, for being the best role models I could ever ask for. Lastly, shoutout to my good friend, Stavan Shah, for always being my go-to concert buddy and business partner.
