We had the good fortune of connecting with William Christopher Scandrett` and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William Christopher, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote or phrase is “Do it Scared”. I, like most people, have severe anxiety at times, especially when it comes to doing or promoting my business. This might be contributed to my consistent worrying about people’s opinions of my work and my questioning if what I do is of value. In most cases, I walk into the room afraid and nervous, but I always challenge myself to push through and allow myself to grow outside of my comfort zone.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I primarily work as a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Director, training teachers, writing curriculum, and teaching. I’m also a DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) Advocate for my organization.
Outside of my main career, I am a STEAM-based children’s author. I recently released my second book of the series titled “The Adventures of Old Swifton Road”.
I was inspired to write these stories to fill the need for black and brown characters to be highlighted in children’s books so that black and brown kids can have a sense of identity in STEAM educational content and literature.
The work I do now started right after I graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Geosciences and Water Sciences. I was one of only a few Black students to graduate from the program to only enter a STEAM field that is less diverse. I believe that the work I do can encourage and inspire young children of color to pursue STEAM degrees and trade programs that will eventually result in a more diverse and inclusive workforce and society.
“The Adventures of Old Swifton Road” is a collection of STEAM-based children’s stories that reveal fun and inspiring tales through the eyes of Black and Brown American children from various socio-economic upbringings.
The series is available on Amazon and Barnes&Noble.com.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to go to the Beltline near Ponce City Market. There are many great restaurants, bars, and cool venues in the area and Piedmont Park is only a short walk away. The best thing to do on the Beltline is to grab a scooter or bike and zip all around Atlanta.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my family, my ancestors, and more specifically my grandparents for inspiring me to write stories and carry on the legacy of storytelling. Many people in my family are writers and poets, because of them I have the skillset to write children’s books and continue the tradition of storytelling that has been a pivotal part of black culture since before the African diaspora.
