We had the good fortune of connecting with William Bailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, what was your thought process behind starting your own business? The thought process behind starting Pynk Gorilla Entertainment was now or never. I was with a team and they fell apart, instead of me sitting around just waiting for whatever to happen I filled the paperwork that night. I’ve never been the type to sit and wait for someone to do something. I knew that I needed a team ideal to who I am as a person. Thus Pynk Gorilla Entertainment was created. Most record labels are not for LGBT artists and what their brand represents and a lot of time they try to change you, that’s something we vow to never do. The first LGBT record label owned by two black gay men and a black transwoman.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a leader all my life. I have had to struggle and grind hard all my life and take care of the ones around me . I have been the underdog all my life while constantly being knocked down by the trauma of my past and I decided to use all of that to my advantage. I take pride in making it happen not only for myself but for others around me and for the culture of Out Hip Hop. I’m not looking for fame or clout, I just want to make a change in people lives and the world. My music may not be for everyone but everyone can learn from me. I have overcome so much and I never gave up. I wanted a seat at the table so bad within the LGBT entertainment game but instead I have been able to build a house and allow others to bring in the tables and have a seat. And for that I’m definitely a King in this Out Hip Hop game.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bff was visting I would first sit and talk smoke plenty of weed and just eat all night . The next day I would probaly take her shopping and out to see the city eating hotdogs and pizza and that would probaly be what we do all week is chill smoke shop and talk and go to the #1 LGBT owned bar in Harlem “Lambda Lounge” for some great drinks. I’m not really a social person but I love being with the people I love.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout 4NI visuals. Chad Bailey has been the eye behind all the visuals from photoshoots to music videos for me as a artist and everything that comes out of Pynk Gorilla entertainment. He is also behind a lot of the amazing visuals seen my a lot of LGBT artists you see today in the game . Definitely the Top LGBT directors in NYC. He is amazing at what he does and higly recommended.
