We had the good fortune of connecting with Wayne Brophy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have run CAST for 17 years so it is fair to say that I have lots of stories! I started my business from my bedroom at home and seventeen years later, we are an international executive recruitment firm with offices around the world. The business has evolved so much. We have embraced technology for many years and now combine AI, automation and data analytics with engaging personal communication from our teams to deliver a world-class service. We were one of the first recruitment businesses to adopt video technology as part of our candidate selection process and data-driven people insights to find the best talent and match for our clients.

Running a business for so long is not easy. It takes its toll on you and it is often lonely. That said, I wouldn’t change it for the world and I would encourage any other entrepreneur to follow their dreams. One thing I would advise is that you should know who you are and what you represent. This for me is my “go to” whenever I make a decision. I believe I have a strong moral compass and ethics. I would never knowingly do the wrong thing or compromise my or CAST’s integrity. Even the company name was derived from this. I liked the word “CAST” as for me it symbolized something that was solid and dependable as well as having connotations in recruitment (i.e. CASTing the net searching for candidates).

Is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

Hard work, effort, and determination! Also, being highly organised and process driven helps create an agile business, which has proved to be a huge advantage in recent years.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first boss after leaving university was Paul Richardson, then was a director at Exel Logistics (now DHL). He was a tough manager and very demanding. However, he was a great person to learn from. He was also exceptionally commercial and very entrepreneurial. I attended several meetings with him where he convinced customers to buy new products and services that they had never seen or heard of. He was a brilliant salesperson.

My second shout-out would be to Matthew Barnes. Matthew was my second boss after I moved on from Exel. At the time, Matthew was a Regional Director for Aldi Stores in the UK (he has since moved on to be Aldi UK CEO & is now on the Aldi Sud board covering operations in the UK, Ireland, and the US). He was a very different line manager from Paul and again I learned so much from him. He was only a few years older than me but was responsible for an entire region within the UK. He was charismatic, demanding and his attention to detail was the best I have ever seen. He was an inspirational guy and made you feel like you wanted to be him!!!

I learned and experienced so much from both guys and it is fair to say that they helped shape me into the leader and entrepreneur I am today.
