We had the good fortune of connecting with Walt Brock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Walt, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has been everything for me. I’ve looked at the stops I’ve made along the way, and there weren’t any guarantees about the lessons that would come from the risks. I always take the time to look at calculated risks before I make a decision. If you think about successful people, they’ve taken some level of risk at some point. That is what separates successful people from people who have goals and ideas but are scared to jump and do it.
I believe that risk is the cost you pay for the opportunity. As I look at my journey with CrossOvr, starting with meeting my business partner, then leaving my full-time job, the risk has been rewarding, and I’m excited to say there is more to come. There have been some uncomfortable moments and I know there are more to come, but that’s all a part of it. Taking risks has played a huge role in my career, and it’s something that I take pride in. Being afraid is bound to happen but being able to manage/work through it is crucial.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
CrossOvr Collective is a sports & entertainment agency that aims to disrupt traditional models of sports and entertainment by integrating culturally relevant initiatives through brand partnerships. One of the things I am most proud of is taking the leap from higher education to entrepreneurship. It was not an easy transition but with the support of my family & friends I’ve been able to learn a lot. Some of the lessons I learned was to take risks and not let people’s lack of understanding of your goals/dreams get in the way of pursuing them. My business partner, Steph & I are excited to see CrossOvr Collective grow while continuing to meet our clients’ needs in such a unique space.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week-long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places, or things to check out?
I am still getting acclimated to the Atlanta area, but if I had to choose, there would be three spots: The Battery, Fellaship Cigar Bar & The Gathering Spot. I love The Battery because there is so much to do from the restaurants to catching a Braves game at Truist Park. I also enjoy cigars so I love to hang out at Fellaship in Downtown Atlanta. The food is also delicious! I also think The Gathering Spot has been a great place for someone like me who is newer to the Atlanta area. It’s been great for personal and professional networking and they have really cool events.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The first person I want to dedicate this shoutout to is my mom. We are originally from the Bay Area but moved to Huntsville, Alabama when I was eight, so she could attend Oakwood University. She already had a bachelor’s degree in social work, but decided she wanted to get a degree in theology so she could continue to help people through her social work. She continued her education even further by attending Andrew’s University in Michigan to earn her master’s in Divinity. She always took risks because she wanted to better herself, something I have always admired about her and the reason I aspired to be more like her. One of my favorite quotes from her is, “It doesn’t matter if people understand or if it looks crazy from the outside, you should still do it.”
The second person I want to dedicate this shoutout to is my wife. From the moment I left my job in higher education, I’ve had to lean on her for support. She’s also has been an entrepreneur longer than I have, so I think I’ve learned a lot of lessons from watching her. She’s my rock and I’m so thankful for her support.
