We had the good fortune of connecting with Vidya Sharma and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vidya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Overall thought behind starting my own art business is to have my creativity reach others homes/work spaces.
Firstly, I would like to give a background on two sides of me – ‘the artist me’ and ‘the corporate career woman me’
Professionally, I am a full-time corporate manager in the IT-space.
Personally/Creatively, I am a full-time artist; yes, I did say ‘full-time’ artist in addition to being full-time IT manager, that how I like to identify myself :).
Ever since I knew my senses, I have been a creative person/an artist first, before anything else. I believe, the creative trait in me is a born talent, passed on through artistic genes of my maternal granddad, who was an artist himself.
Though professionally, I have paved my path in being a corporate manager, personally, I still put 100% time, effort, zeal, new creations into my art.
My work that began as a kid, making small handmade products from range of greeting cards, stationary, drawings for myself and my family and friends, has now become into a very broad range of handmade creative products, As I was doing more and more products and people started to recognize my work, appreciate and buy it, I wanted to next venture in setting up a business of my handmade products.
My continual focus has been, bringing in more new, artistic, creative expressions of my art and give my creative spirit avenues to explore, rather solely focus on commercializing my products in a bulk lot price.
I have always found immense balance, peace and happiness in my artistic pursuits, and now with starting this business, I am enjoying this new phase and growth in artistic me.
Throughout my life, I have been asked by peoples from all walks of life, as how I manage a full time career and a full time artist? And my response to them has been, my career is the work I have chosen to do, while, the artist in me is the soul of my life and who I am.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A self taught artist, experimental, inquisitive, explorer, whose love for colors and passion to upcycle and recycle what’s discarded as ‘trash’ into a functional, contemporary art or home décor, is what drives the artist’s creativity in my products.
The catalog spans from abstracts, acrylic pours, wood arts, home decors, Epoxy/Resin collection to newly launched digital art prints on canvas and other merchandise.
Art and artistic expression, exploration is a continuous journey not a destination. I strongly believe there is no pinnacle or perfection in the creative process or for an artist. Every imagination that I attempt to express in my art, is a learning for me and I enjoy the process more than worrying about the end result.
I just want take my artistic expressions into more people’s homes/offices/leisure spaces and continue my journey as an artist with same enthusiasm, fearlessness, passion, honesty and commitment, to reflect the good work in my products, representing my brand, my story.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being fairly new to Atlanta, I am yet explore a lot in this beautiful city and other nearby places. But I am an explorer, so I would love to go to spend in the mountains, waterfalls. Some of the awesome ones I explored has been Smoky Mountains, especially Gatlinburg during Christmas, and the Rock City/Ruby Falls. In beaches, Jekyll Islands is one of the best, followed by Savannah.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout filled with humility and gratitude always goes to my maternal granddad, who had been a great artist himself and I could inherit splatter of his artistic genes in me. Next it has to be my parents, who realized my natural instincts of being artistic and encouraged me. I also appreciate everyone from friends, to colleagues from my corporate job, to clients whom I worked for, for expressing their awe and admiration on how I handle a professional and an artist 100% without ignoring one for other.
