We had the good fortune of connecting with Venus Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Venus, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
For those that know me, I do not like the word, “lesson”. I prefer the term, “take away”. Ha! Ha!
So, the most important take away from owning my own business is to do the work, be kind, be patient, and trust the process. They all work synergistically.
I wish there was a way to be successful without the combination of these 4 keys. If you desire anything in life, you must do what it takes to get it. In addition to doing what it takes, you must be kind. Kindness is the ‘quality or state of taking an active interest in the welfare of others’. Even the toughest individuals respond to kindness. Kindness is a magnet. It attracts exactly what you desire for your life. Now patience, that is a tough one. Being patient in business is difficult at times. I have learned that even when my efforts SEEM to yield little results, I must refuse to give up hope. Trusting the process is the final piece. We must believe without a shadow of a doubt, that everything we have done up until now will work out in our favor.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Calming Home By Venus is the luxury organizing and home styling business that alleviates stress for overwhelmed individuals by creating and implementing easy to manage customized solutions to break the cycle of disorder. We elevate your space with modern styling techniques to capture the essence of luxury and sophistication. One thing that sets us apart is our love for people. No one wants to be vulnerable. However, inviting a luxury organizer into your home can be intimidating. We know how courageous you are to allow us to come into your space. So, we want to be compassionate, yet help you reach your goals of having peace within your home and head. We also combine organizing with styling. The systems we implement, if sustained, will break the cycle of disorder.
Personally, I am so excited about the endless possibilities that are set before me.
I had to put myself out there. Right from the beginning, I told everyone about my new business. My enthusiasm was contagious. Family and friends would let me come and organize their closets, laundry rooms, pantries, and kitchens. I even organized an attic. I took before and after photos and posted them on social media. Also, everyday I would jump on Instagram with an encouraging message and upbeat music. That was the beginning of creating my very own community. People were able to see my personality and connect with me. However, there was a time in my business, I went through a very dark period. I was depressed, and it took a toll on me. Even though I started out strong, a cloud came and enveloped me for a few months. Talk therapy, close family and friends helped me to break out of that prison of despair. Then it was, “Game On”! A close friend of mine reached out to a local news channel and asked if they would allow me to introduce Calming Home By Venus. To my surprise, the answer was, “yes”. That led to be a yearlong of segments, educating the public on organizing and styling techniques. I have been featured on Yahoo News, MSN News, Haystack News, WJBF News Channel 6, and WRDW News Channel 12. This year I also won an award for Best Service for 2024 from Houzz. As I began really helping individuals with getting their homes together, the referrals started coming in. I would be invited to assist other ladies and gentlemen with banishing their clutter. Then the same people would invite me back to spread the calm throughout the rest of their homes.
I quickly realized what I offer to my clients is more than just organizing. It is a life transformation. There comes a sense of pride and elevated self-worth when our surroundings are organized and aesthetically pleasing. Having an organized and beautiful home is a way to take care of ourselves and our families. The brain has room to relax, rejuvenate, and create; self care at its finest. Since I love the finer things in life, luxury living is what I love. I decided to create a full experience surrounding the projects we do.
It has not been easy. The biggest challenge is self-sabotage. When I feel l should be farther along, or I am too old, or I am not smart enough, or I am not creative enough… I remember to be my own best friend. If my best friend were to tell me those things about themselves, I would reassure them of all the reasons why those thoughts are not true. Therefore, I must tell myself what I am thinking and feeling are lies. I have positive affirmations in my office, on my phone and iPad.
Lessons I have learned along the way: If you have a desire to offer a service or product, do it. I have learned the more creative we are, the more money we make. Well meaning friends may say you need to niche down. In some cases, you may. However, there are so many services or products that can be offered within a certain niche. Explore the options. For instance, we offer an array of services: Air BNB Set Up and Style, Calming Kids Sessions, Custom Closets, Home Styling, A Done For You Laundry Service, Masters Tournament Housing Transition, Organizing, Styling Sessions, Unpacking and Set Up, and more.
I had to get clear on what I could really do and who would help me achieve my goals. Yes, I am a praying woman, so I prayed and still pray a lot. Being strategic is not my superpower. I consistently remind myself; my team cannot read my mind. It is imperative to create checklists for them as I do for my clients. So, being strategic is crucial to longevity. You best believe I am always in some sort of class, mastermind, or course. “School is never out for the pro.” It is important to stay current, and do not be afraid to try something new.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you come to Atlanta in the spring and summer, Six Flags Amusement Park has to be on your list.
I would recommend visiting Alpharetta, and head to Avalon Boulevard. The area has a luxury appeal with West Elm, The Avalon Hotel, and international cuisine.
The light show at Stone Mountain is so cool. If visiting in the winter, dress in layers. It is amazing to see all the images created with lights!
The Atlanta Aquarium is another stop you don’t want to miss.
Of course, The Container Store is #1 on my list. Atlanta has 2 locations. I normally visit the one in Buckhead.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I must say above any other human, it is to my mother I want to give the Shout Out. Her love of having a beautiful well-arranged home and yard has led to my success as a professional organizer and home stylist. She equipped me with all the fundamentals of how to create organized areas. I remember growing up, there was a specific way to do just about everything inside and outside of our home. There was a certain way the dishes had to be dried. For example, never dry the inside of glasses. If we did, it might have left lint inside the glass and it could appear dirty. The towels had to be folded just so. I am so grateful for her training. Well, it has caused me to be a bit OCD. Ha! Ha! That is what makes me good at what I do. My mother also has an exquisite taste for the finer things in life. We always had the best. She felt if it was expensive, then she HAD to have it. She taught me to always do my very best, no matter what. My mother gave me the best foundation for creating organized yet beautiful livable spaces.
